I didn't notice that that AR10 wasn't the new armalite version. We need DETAILS! |

Yup......it's an original Portuguese gun on a Specialty Arms lower.......number 55 out of 70 made!
Specialty Arms milled each one out of bar stock. The owner of Specialty then went on to start up Telko.....who made cast AR-10 lowers (Primarily for Paragon, who sold AR-10's in the early 80's). Shoots wonderfully......with little recoil, and a lot of interesting looks at the range |

I thought I would post this info in all of the more recent “Retro Discussions” that I could find in the hopes that I may help those who are looking for info, and it may help to cut down on duplicate posts.

If anyone is interested in repro Colt Model 01 green painted stocks I reproduced a set several years ago for myself. I didn't think there was a great deal of intrest at that time but if enough people want them I can do them on a part time basis. The way I did it was to take one of my original sets and had an auto paint store digitally photograph the original then mix the paint to exactly match (this is how they match the paint for repairing old cars) the original stock. Then I simply spray painted the black A1 furniture at my family's body shop and they came out great! If there was enough intrest I could do more. I have also sold the paint to a few people and no complaints when the used it to spray parts to match the original stuff. Let me know if there is any intrest in such a thing.

Sure, would rather buy the paint, being a DIY kinda guy. |

Very nice. What did you use for the XM177E2 barrel? Have not decided what to do for a barrel with my E2 project. |

I'd like to know as well...
A cut Bushy S/L is what I had in mind - but am I lame for possibly using a .750 barrel & FSB? |
"If only you could see what I've seen with your eyes..."

picked up an older A1 upper and barrel set up, reciever was a Colt, the barrel is unmarked, 1/12 twist, the front sight base was held in place with screws then peened in place, it was hell to remove but got it off and replaced using taper pins without any damage surprisingly enough. If I had to guess, I'd say it is a cut down Colt barrel, the 607 uses a Colt 1/7 "C MP CB" 11.5 barrel.
Lame? no not really, here's one I tossed together with some spare parts, uses a bushmaster 11.5 heavy barrel, not really correct, but cool none the less, did'nt look right with a moderator and heavy barrel but looks better with the A1 |
lookin' good!
I might go down the bumpy road of the 10-10.5" barrel with XM moderator, so I'm hoping if I end up with a heavy barrel, it might not look too off... (Still holding out for a skinny barrel tho'...hint hint!) |

You HAD to post that, didn't you YardDogOne, , that is exactly how I gonna build mine but w/ and A2 lower and a 14.5 M4 barrel..

In for a Penny, in for a Pound

try here www.essentialarms.com Also talk to Vaughn there and tell him we want him to do his new forged lowers with the front hole reinforcement milled down and magazine release fences removed. He is the only manufacture that I know of that does finishes in Sandstrom 9. I know it would not be a true early receiver, bit it would be close enough. The more of us that call him and ask, the more he would be prone to offering that option. |

Very nice, looks like factory original? Gotta love those old shiny handguards. Colt never painted the exterior of their upper and lowers, with Sandstrom 9A or anything else (other then touch up paint). From the get go a Solid Film Lubricant (SFL) is applied to the interior of the upper and the receiver extension tube, but not the Sandstrom brand. |

Man you have no idea what you just did to me! Runs off and grabs AR and files. BTW what's with the A1 upper in pic #1? If you milled the case deflector off then you stole yet another one of my ideas. |
You "inspired" me !!! , on the top photo of my parts pile (futuer XM177E2 clone) , the upper i got at a show for 25dollars , as it was covered in many coats of of horrible thick paint , so when i beadblasted the other lowers prior to the Norrells finish , i bead blasted the paint off that upper , This one is a "Diamond in the rough" as the barrel i got from SARCO for 50dollars , it is a Chrome lined Colt , that has a ring in it , right at the muzzle , so when i shorten it , it will be all good !! , im going to get to work on this one right away !! buzgn .. |
Mentalstampede : i did those up myself , as i thought that "look" of the old Vietnam M16's was badazzz !! buzgun ... |

My Colt SP1 has only had two owners and I don't remember my dad shooting it much. I played with the idea of putting a three prong suppresor on it but have just never bothered. |

with all the accessories out these days why go retro?
here is my retro AR-15 http://johno.myiglou.com/images/kyrifle1.jpg |
I see you dont have a trigger lock on that , and it is equipped with a high capacity flint , is it at least registered ? |
I never really cared for any of the ARs with the forward assists on them (aesthetically). the more I play with accessories the less I like them. So for me I'm glad to see some retro threads going. Besides it's the love of the core gun that unites us. |

This thread needs a serious BTT!!!! Crap..I'm starting to want an XM607. But should I do an SBR'd 607, XM177E2, or M4? If I did the XM607 or 177E2, I'd need to find an A1 upper without a case deflector...

Kewl retros!
Please pardon the noob question here, but with a slab side where does the brass go? Straight back over your shoulder?
Also with no forward assist would there ever been a problem as long as its kept clean? You all have some nice stuff and makes me interested in a light-weight low-drag setup. |
In God We Trust............everyone else keep your hands where I can see em!!!
The brass usually comes out at about 4 o'clock. It's usually pretty consistant too. And I've also never had a problem where I've needed a forward assist so as long as you keep it clean, it should be fine. |
Did the majority of the XM607s come with or without a forward assist
Thanks very much for these photos CaptRichardson , as i have used these to copy from , in modifying A2 lowers to XM16 for my retros !!! |
