Here's a pic of my first build. I served between '98 & '01, so I'm a bit more familar w/ the A2's, so let me know what I should change or isn't correct for an "early" build. I didn't put this together with the intention of creating an early model, it was kinda what I ended up with to put together. I know the 30rnd mag isn't right, but what about colors for the furniture etc? I'm no expert, as I'm sure some of you can tell by looking at my rifle, but I'm willing to learn. Thanks in advance.http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a313/muddspuffin/DSC00046.jpg

All I would change would be the grip to a real A1. That looks like one of those trap-door grips. Is it? Very nice 653 clone though!
Link Posted: 9/21/2006 10:42:26 PM EDT
[#5]
Yeah, it's a trap door. I kinda like it, I keep spare springs and pins in it, but I might swap over to an A1 as you suggested. Thanks for the compliment.

NICE 653!!! I shot my first M16 on Monday (US Gov't marked M16A1 lower, 16" light barreled A4 upper with aimpoint; LOVED the Aimpoint) and I've decided that I'm gonna save up for one. That thing was so awesome...

A1s just look a little funky with a 30rd mag in them...

Cool regardless.

I think the A1's with the birdcage FH and 30 rounder look bad ass

If it had the older FH style, then the 20 rounder would look cooler...just something about the birdcage, A1 sights/HG and 30rd combo...

Hmm, gunbroker doesnt seem to have any. I need AT LEAST one to go with the 601. $200 sucks though . Maybe I'll be able to find one for less. Where do you guys usually search and what keywords do you use?

My first build (and AR) and still a work in progress.  I've ordered some brownells Gunkote to match the upper/lower color and I'm really thinking about fileing the fence and filling the Safe/Fire on the right side.

Still gotta pick up a trigger guard assy., too.

I stand corrected...

Thanks for the good eyes...

But, it still "counts" in my book... Dawn of the Dead is pretty "old school" if you ask me.

Its an AP15 the predecessor to the AP74, they are different, AP74 has a bolt hold, Bird cage flash hider etc

I had a AP74 when I was a kid exactly like the one pictured above. Total junk, 3 prong flash hider was plastic, really soft steel, parts constantly breaking. Dont know about the AP 15

This is me letting my "creative juices" flow...I like the old Colt ads, so I tried to make my own.  The rifle in the pic is my first build which I did yesterday.  (used a 20 dollar clamp-on vise which I clamped on a bookcase in my apartment.  Damn thing worked!)

I know it isn't totally accurate, parts-wise...but who here is gonna notice?

Nice!! Did you just use regular black electrical tape to hold those 2 mags together? How's it holding?

Holds pretty good so far, but I'm trewating it gently, since heat will soften the tape up and it will loosen up, but so far, no problems.
