For the time being I can't afford a can and I'd like recommendations on good flash hider.

Until I own a can I see no point in shooting subs so I'll be just using supers.

This would also be a home defense AR pistol.

Thanks in advance.

not a Flash Hider, but you said home defense so I'm interpreting that as meaning "muzzle device".

Thanks, this is the kind of thing I had in mind.

my 10.3 5.56 works well with a LeVang linear to push a lot of blast forward, and somewhat breaks up the gas to prevent re ignition... if you hand load, H322 mitigates a lot of muzzle flash

Yes I do handload, right now only .223.

My 10.3" 300 blackout works great with a KAK Flash Can.

That KAK flash can I though was designed to make a fireball of the muzzle flash?

For 5.56 I would say yes.  But, so far that hasn't been my experience with 300 blackout.  Even with supersonic there isn't the volume of unburned powder in 300blk to create the massive fireballs one gets from 5.56 in a short barrel.  I like the flash can because it directs the noise and concussion down range.

The one I use on my 6.8 12 inch, which would be the same for a .300, is the MI Blast Diverter.
I cannot tell there is much if any recoil reduction but it does work to throw blast downrange.

Another MI product I use on my 8.5 inch .338 Spectre and 13" .458 SOCOM is the MI Blast can.  All it is is a cone that throws the blast down range and it works as well as the KX3s I had on them before, without the need to take anything apart to clean and 1/4 the price.  It is long enough to take the 13 inch to over 16 inches so it could be pinned and welded so I could use the SBRed lower for something else.

I have this on my 8 in. Works great. If I shoot without it, my hair gets mussed. Unless I'm shooting suppressed.

You may be surprised by the reduction in volume from supers to subs without a silencer. Run a couple brands though and see.

I'll eventually try that. This barrel is 10.5" and its a 1:8 twist. This would limit what subs I could shoot if I did eventually buy a can won't it?

I've got one of these on my 10.3 and feel like it does a nice job redirecting the blast (don't notice any flash) without adding a lot of length to the end

You should be fine with the "longer" 10.5 with a 1:8.

Anything heavier/longer than a 220g in a 8", or less, with a 1:8 may be a problem.

I like the Black River Tactical Covert Comp. It's a linear comp that reduces flash and concussion better than an A2 while being affordable and lightweight.

If not having a can is only for the time being, then I'd get a flash hider mount for whatever suppressor you intend to buy down the road. Once you have the suppressor if you decide you want to run a muzzle brake for extended suppressor life, you can always swap the flash hider mount to something else and have the option to use the suppressor on that as well.

That is a very good point. I really don't know much about suppressors or muzzle devices that allow suppressors to mount directly.

If I were to buy a .308 dia A2 "birdcage", are there cans that mount to it?

So I went with a RRA .308 A2 flash hider. I found a used one I found in the EE for $6.

Because I have decided that at some point I want a suppressor however, it might have to wait a couple of years.

Until I figure out what type of can I want, I didn't want to buy a muzzle device that I might not want once I get a can.

Get this from DeadAir-

And then when you're ready, I recommend their Sandman S-

That way you didn't waste any money on a flash hider.
