 TROLL ALERTUnderstand that a .223 cartridge has an overall length of over 2 inches. That means that the bullet will be OUTSIDE THE "MUZZLE" When you touch it off. Where are you going to drill your gas port hole? Check the accuracy on this round! Can you imagine the muzzle flash!? TROLL ALERT

Come on now he only has 1 post; let’s be nice to the  !Maybe he does not know how to measure a barrel? 4.5 And 5.5 look really short, he might have thought that you only measure the last few inches of the barrel or something like that! |

I have done some 6.5" 5.56 barrels.
I just happened to be at the range after dark to test fire the barrels so I could ship them out the next day. I was really expecting a massive fireball. With a phantom flash suppressor, I was pleasantly surprised that the flash was not that bad. |

Let me explain to you my project. I got a 10" suppressor and I wont go more than 14 Inches long?

6" is about as short as you can go. The pistol located gas port is about 4.7" from the breech face. Then add 1.3" of barrel in front of the gas port. and you are 6" long. This barely gives you enough barrel to put a PRI gas block on it which is about the shortest gas block you can get, being the same length as the end of the gas tube. 6.5" would be better, giving you almost 2" of barrel past the gas port. I could do this barrel for you, but it's up to you to play with the gas port size based on the effects of your suppressor. |

Hmmm, the gas block on my 6 inch M2 upper measures .500 long - that must be how they did the 4 inch uppers they built.

You could certainly custom make a shorter gas tube and gas block, but it adds considerably to the costs unless you can produce them 100 pieces at a time. Within the constraints of off-the-shelf components such as gas blocks and gas tubes, 6" is about the realistic minimum. |

Getting that short of a barrel must kill the power. Wouldn't a 4inch 22 rimfire mag be just about as good?

WHAT?!?!!?!?!?!?  May I suggest a 9 inch barrel with an integral suppressor, port the last 1.5 to 2 inches, have the initial expansion chamber extend over the barrel to the receiver, and then have multiple baffles out to 5 inches beyond the barrel. You will have to address thermal issues but that is a good start to your design goal. Configure the gas port as a 7.5 inch barrel gun and it should run fine. A 4 inch barrel with a 10 inch suppressor is: 1. Going to have worse ballistics then a 22LR. 2. Is going to be very dangerous to shoot. 3. It will blow up (due to a baffle strike) Sorry, just the truth, I know it hurts.

Quickload estimates that a good 55gr load would be doing 2067fps from a 6.5" barrel. CCI specifies 1425fps from a 6" barrel with both of their 40 gr loads. There appears to be a signigincant difference between the two cartridges, but the short barrel certainly does handicap the 223... I also like the idea mentioned of an inegral comp with a large expansion chamber volume over the barrel and a shorter stack of baffles out front. |
