Found a good deal on a shilen barrel in 17 Remington (centerfire round from the 70's). What are your thoughts, in the limited research I have done, I've read that these rigged out can weigh 12-20 pounds. Personally I would like to avoid anything too heavy.

Blank or drop-in barrel?

Shouldn't be more than a few ounces heavier than a .22 caliber bore rifle with equivalent profile.

That seems really fast for a 25 grn bullet doing 4000 fps.

have that puppy reamed into a 17 predator and then you'll be cookin! but then again the 1:10 twist would hold you back as I'm not sure it would spin up the 30's kindler golds which is where the predator shines.

if the barrel is heavy maybe look to one of those thick slick side upper receivers dpms makes.

We made about 20 uppers in 17 Remington back around 2002 or so.
Using Pac-Nor 1:10 twist barrel blanks they shot best with Starke 30 grain bullets.  That was before Todd Kindler was making bullets.

For shooting factory Remington 25gr ammo, we found that 1:12 twist shot better than the 1:10.  However, 1:12 was too slow to stabilize most other bullets including the Hornady 20 grain V-Max.

I've got one built on a Shilen barrel.  It's 24" and .936" diameter, so it's heavy from that stand point.  It shoots lights out with Nosler 20 grain FBHP over H4895.

I just purchased one from midway.  It was on sale for 370 with a bolt.  Received it today. Will probably be a bit till I assemble but I read nothing but good about it.

I received my 17 rem shilen barrel yesterday.  Since we're on the topic any other loads that seem to work well?
