Not sure we're on the same page? I'm saying finish your own 80% lower and forget dealing with your local FFL's and the entire game of registration that isn't registration but it is.

That came across a bit harsher than I'd intended, apologies for that.

I've done 80s, and i have a couple other 80s to do.  I've also done a fair share of cerakoting (blasted and freshly parked steel, blasted bare aluminum for 80% lowers, and anodized lowers/uppers/handguards).  Yes, I did it 100% to the letter on the directions, with the one exception of taking 2 full days to degrease heating, acetone, brake cleaner, and repeating to the point of "holy shit just get to it already".  I gotta say....if you don't need the color pallette, I honestly am NOT a fan of cerakote.  Every gun i've done (and other friends who had professional finishing done) have all manner of dings, mars in the finish, right down to shiny aluminum showing through.

Maybe I just bang my guns around and use them more than the average bear, IDK.  But I've done tons of 80s, and it just isn't worth the hassle.

I can build the upper and put it on my existing 308 lower to shoot for the time being, and once I pull handles and eject (retire from .mil) and head to Texas, it won't be an issue anymore.

Like I said, not in a rush....plenty of other stuff to occupy my time till then.

ETA:  I'm not aware of any 80% lowers that fit aesthetically with the M5 upper, but if you do and it's already anodized I'd be willing to give it a look, as I'm planning on refinishing a couple other guns with Norrell's molyresin (which has held up unspeakably better than cerakote on guns that get FAR more use/abuse) so I'd be willing to give that a go on an AR.

Posting a follow-up to my own question, the M5 will work with Larue mags. This will allow you to seat out to 2.874 (I got this number by hitting my new mag with a caliper).

sofar, just took it out plinking at a 1000yd range (no paper targets), was able to consistently hit doghouse-sized objects at 800, very unscientific, need to take it to a 100yd range to dial it in.  it's the "match" version, I had one of the the older heavy fluted versions, it was terrible, 6" group at 100yds.  this one might pan out, but for now, the jury is still out.

Faxon in general make really nice kit.  I have one of their pencil tubes on a lightweight 5.56 build and it's easily every bit as accurate as my Daniel Defense CHF/CL lightweight on a different build.  2" with 55-grain plinking handloads and an ALG QMS is pretty standard.

I think, JIMHO, they had a bad batch of the now-discontinued 308 "heavy fluted" barrels, 18" and 20".  It appears that barrel has been superceded by the 308 heavy fluted "match" barrel, it also costs a little bit more, has NiB barrel extension.  JHR1986 asks a good question because there hasn't been a lot said about the newer version.  I have quite a few other Faxon barrels that shoot very well, no complaints.

I like the ergonomics of the Badger Ordnance ambi charging handle, but it's not a direct fit, some discrete mods were needed.  here's what my modified Badger Ordnance CH looks like, modified to fit the Aero M5.  After the mods, I had it cerakoted Magpul FDE, to match.  basically, I had to widen the "gap" so that it cleared the top edges of the lower receiver buffer tube upright.

Welp, my profile is all jacked on the computers at work, I'm likely doing a half day today, and completely mission-ineffective until comm figures their shit out, so at the risk of starting a civil war....

Ballistic Advantage 22" non-fluted vs Criterion 22" hybrid via brownells.

I have a pretty good idea which I'm going with, but share your thoughts and try to convince me otherwise.  Only problem is, I'm not saying which I favor or why.

Honestly just looking for thoughts one way or the other; both are priced closely enough it's really a wash in that arena.

I'm also sorta considering the 24" criterion at fulton, but keeping it to at least equal lengths and price (plus or minus 5 bucks) for the time being.

If you want to compare the 24" BA vs the 24" fulton/criterion, with the 70-ish dollar price difference not a factor (and no fluting for either), I'll entertain that as well.

I was going to go BA when I built mine last year, but I ended up splurging on a Proof CF job. I've seen a few too many reviews where the BA barrels didn't meet the sub MOA claim. I think I'd try my luck with Criterion if I were in your shoes.
Link Posted: 9/25/2018 1:53:47 PM EDT

For the same money I would definitely choose the criterion over the ballistic advantage.

You guys are thinking along the same lines I am it appears.

I am curious though, I've seen a few references to dwell time on the creed *POSSIBLY* being an issue (on some folks' builds, not so much on others), so is there a massive advantage to 24" over 22"?  Or conversely, are there more issues with dwell time experienced with the 24" over the 22"?

What buffer/spring setup is working for everyone?  I have an SLR adjustable, and with it all the way open, I cannot get it to load the next round.  It will eject the spent case.  I am running the buffer/spring combo that came with the complete M5 lower.  I will run suppressed once my can is approved.

ETA:  the CH is pretty hard to rack.  Much harder than any of my AR-15’s

I have a JPSCS2-10H2 GEN 2 Silent Captured Spring in mine. Haven't run it suppressed yet.

You sure the gas block is set in the sweet spot? I have an SLR block as well and I can either fling the brass into next week or turn it into a single shot. Does it seem to change much at all after adjusting the gas block?

Are you saying the charging handle is hard to pull back after a shot? Or when you go to chamber the first round?

When I started, I had the gas block at about 5 clicks out.  I ran it all the way open, and it is still doing the same.  It ejects the spent case, but won’t load the next.  The charging handle is always hard to pull.  I installed a standard AR-15 carbine buffet spring, and it pulls like it should.  But I know I can’t run an AR-15 spring.

I have the JP SCS spring. Mine is running an SLR adjustable gas block, and with AE ammo it runs nicely.

If the charging handle is that hard to pull you might be dragging somewhere. Look inside the receiver for drag marks, see if there is something binding, etc. Also make sure the tube and gas block are located correctly.

We really need a way to "like" pictures/posts on here like you can on other forums.

Aero stuff is on sale at brownells again. Code there for 10 bucks off 75 with free shipping too.

Got a M5 lower headed my way for 90 bucks. Not thrilled about MD's horseshit 50-dollar transfer fees but whatever.

Hopefully the BHO functions better on the Aero than it has on my MATEN.  It would barely catch the bolt at all, and that was only after I'd DRASTICALLY filed down the bottom tab on it so it would go in far enough to allow the holding portion to swing up high enough to catch it.  And even then simple pressure from the bolt or the slightest movement of the rifle would cause it to drop and allow the bolt to sail into battery.  That setup has been one disappointment after another.  Rainier barrel is accurate AF though.
