Such a thing?  Love the one for .223/5.56...wealth of info.

What is the popular anti-personnel .308 for urban environment?  I know what is accurate, but suspect the normal BTHP 168 gr is not the optimum for inflicting damage inside, say 150 yards where sub-moa accuacy may not be required as much as performance.  Suggestions?

Thanks.

Looking for loads for my DPMS AP4 .308 for social engagements.

Cheers!

The Hornady TAP 308 ammo is quite popular, but I prefer the 165grn Hornady SST in my 30 cal hunting rounds, (use them in my 30-06 hunting loads).

I have spoken with Doc GKR about this very subject. I have also read the Hornady TAP ballistics book.

For shooting people:

110 Grain TAP if you are concerned with overpenetration. Otherwise its

155 AMAX TAP

155 AMAX or 150 Nosler Ballistic Tip are your best choices.  Factory loads hold just under MOA out of my AR10.

Big +1

Not a ammo oracle but a good place to read info, search for 308 and start reading TF

150 grain ballistic tips are devestating, with pleanty of penetration. The thin jacket lends itself to great accuracy, sometimes better than matchkings. The polymer tip allows loading to consistant overall length. Oh, and they are available to handload or in loaded commercial ammunition.

I killed two deer with them this year, one handloaded and one with ammo from federal. Both were dead when they hit the ground, though one was a head shot. The second hit one rib going in, shredded the heart and lungs, and took out 3 ribs going out. First time that I saw a deer die without even twitching.

One friend shot a turkey with one of my handloads, and said, " it looks like he swallowed a cherry bomb!" We were still able to save the breast.

Another friend killed 2 elk, one spike and one cow; with my 150 grain BT 308 handloads, so I remain confident in their penetration capabilities.

If you want something for a little longer range you might try the 165s. Also the Accubond is a great all-around bullet. It is bonded like the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, but has a Much higher ballistic coefficient. And it expands almost as rapidly as the ballistic tip. This is the bullet I use for most huntng. But, at 308 velocities the 150 ballistic tip istough to beat.

Original question.

For anti-personnel use you want rapid fragmentation but not too much penetration. My Hornady Ballistics manual reads like this for

155 TAP:

Total penetration - 14.0"
Maximum wound cavity diameter - 7.0"
Depth to max cavity - 4.0"
Retained weight - 72 grains
B.C. - .500
Great all around anti-personnel round

110 TAP:

Total penetration - 10.5"
Maximum wound cavity diameter - 6.75"
Depth to max cavity - 2.5"
Retained weight - 19 grains
B.C. - .305
Better for over-penetration concerns

Generally medium or large game hunting bullets tend to stay together too well and over-penetrate.

Sorry, missed the Urban requirement of the original post. The 110 TAP is tough to beat in this situatuion. The 150 BT is also a good choice. They do expand explosively and fragment at close range. The only one that I have seen exit was on an 80lb whitetail in Georgia, that only hit the ribs and no other bone. The other benefit is that it is ballisticaly similar to 147 ball. The 110 TAP, if you can get it, will produce less recoil. Either way you can' t go wrong.

Oh, and the 155 Amax is a great bullet also. (very similar to Ballistic Tips) I am just partial to Nosler products.

Yea, I havn't been able to check out any gel test data or similar testing to say one way or another about the Nosler BT's. I would really like to get some info on it though. If someone has tested these projectiles in gel. I would like to review it.
