I cut mine off completely (not just the sides), then spray it with Brownell's Gun-kote, and "cook" it by leaning it near the woodstove.

I don't know the legalities of what is a bayo lug (per BATFE), but if I recall correctly Fulton used to sell a replica A1 type upper (during the ban) with a similar modification.

Every lug I have seen in NJ has the lug ground off all of the way to the FSB.

I think hacking the sides off would be sufficient.
