Completely incorrect.

I like Colt products, I dislike the Kool Aid drinkers. Thankfully, they are a small minority.

Wes, how about the Sig 556? I know you're gonna want one of those to replace the 551 you sold

I'm looking forward to seeing the Colt gas piston...is this a variation of the L-W?

Not likely, but maybe General Dynamics will.

Is Colt going to use LW pistons and MRS's? It was Colt who asked LW to build them a piston upper.

Any word if LMT is coming out with a gas piston system?

I hear LW is going to demo something new called a "gas impingement" retrofit for the piston AR's. Should be something great to see.

Monolithic, if I have heard correctly. We will see. If they chamber it in 6.8SPC, then I will really be interested. I am transitioning all my ARs to 6.8SPC except for 3 purpose built 5.56MM RECCEs and 2 carbines.

I am doing the opposite. Moving away from the 6.8 and going to the Grendel in the AR platform. For someone that likes to do long range precision shooting, the 6.5 is leaps above all other AR compatible(OAL limited) rounds.

When & if the 6.5G is available in a 16", I will probably bite on it. But the 6.8SPC for me is here to stay.

There is no "if", "when" has already come to pass.

CSS is already offering a tricked out 16" with a SS LW barrel and AA is adding a Chrome lined 16" to their catalog tomorrow. I'd also bet dollars to doughnuts that AR15barrels.com and MGI will be offering 16" models very soon.

And all of the armchair pontificating about 6.5mm being "too overbore" and other such nonsense claiming that it wouldn't perform in 16" barrels turned out to be unadulterated BS worthy of a backwoods hicktown gunshop. The measured performance from 16" barrels is very good and has been reported here and on 65grendel.com

MGI does not sell barrels. You are thinking of ABS. twl is a rep for each company but they are totally different companies.

This bears some more investigation, a 16" 6.5G may well be in my future. It will peacefully co-exist with my 6.8s.

I'm pretty sure that twl said that MGI will be selling complete uppers with 6.5 Grendel barrels made by ABS.

Looks like you guys need to get the Grendel

Alexander Arms unvailed the Grendel in both 16" and 14.5(I have shot the prototype 16" an dhave seen velocity over 2600 on safe loads)

And Wolf just released the Grendel ammo.

There is a crappy photo of it in the AR forum (not photo, but drawing)

"Colt's Enhanced Carbine Model 1020"

I hope I ordered one. to no avail

Spoke to a major Colt distributor 2 days ago who implied he'd order one (many actually, but 1 for me) direct from Colt's ( 2.11.06) Edit to add: Not happening for him-- yet

Big time manufacturers do actually take orders at these shows - for those who are unaware.

@ $21+ sq ft for the space, they better take orders!!

So now Colt is following the trend. I wonder if they'll have to pay royalties.

Sorry to get off topic, but it's common belief by many that HK was the first to introduce a gas piston conversion. There's even a topic about HK sueing Colt over on HKPro.
Link Posted: 2/9/2006 3:35:10 PM EDT
Oh, holy hell.

HK suing Colt IRT piston AR's?! Seriously, is this Days of Our Lives? Did I step into some sort of twilight zone?

Where, pray tell, did HK get the TDP for the M4? Did they show interest in purchasing Colt and abscound off with the TDP illicitly as is rumored?

Oh, and one more thing, who cares?

Do you think people care this much about Ford vs Chevy? I doubt it. It's just silly. Plain silly.

The AR is so damn popular because it's the only dog in the show. It just kills me. It does.

Rant complete.

Colt's gas piston AR goes back to the 60s and there where numerous other gas piston ARs around prior to the HK -- HK has a patent on the piston design in relation as to how it vents and is essentially self regulating, this patent actually comes from the G36 which is an adaptation of the AR18. The Colt 703 (with a gas piston) was submitted as the one of the first designes for the M16A2.

There have been several other gas piston designs over the last few decades: A patent for a gas piston conversion to the AR was issued in Mr. Langendorfer many years ago... Other people have tested the idea, including KAC, HK and others, hell even I have a piston upper design that is about 20 years old now.

Push come to shove, the T65 would have to be the oldest design that saw large scale production and is still around... and the improved version is out as of last year.

Gas pistons are not new, Colt and others nave had them around since before many of the newest crop where doing anything with firearms... The bottom line on the new Colt rifle is that it is a solid monolithic upper, the lower section of the handguard removes to mount a 203, it does not use standard barrels as the barrel extension is different, and it uses a FAL type piston that is removed out of the front after rotating and removing a forward plug -- the plug is held in by a teeny, tiny little "take down pin" that is pretty cool. However it has nothing to do with LW as some rumored on hear a few days ago... in fact, it is closer to the POF system than anything.
Link Posted: 2/9/2006 5:18:40 PM EDT
The piston design in the HK416, G36, and XM8 is not similar in any way to the AR18, although the design of the bolt and bolt carrier is very, very similar - probably thanks to Hks work with the (in)famous British bullpup.

To be honest, LWRCs piston design is very similar to the AR18 piston.
