I have a Bushmaster 16" carbine that I have had for a very long time that has always served me well. It has been a wonderfully reliable weapon with no malfunctions that were not traceable to magazine problems. It has been to training classes and has served as my home defense weapon faithfully for many years. I am mostly a pistol guy and don't have the opportunity to fool with rifles much in a practical sense.
Lately the death of the AWB has made me think that getting another upper for the rifle would be a good idea, especially one with a flat top on which I could mount an Aimpoint now that they can be had in the non-neutered versions.
My initial idea was to buy a basic M4 profile Bushmaster A3 upper (no carry handle), put on a durable BUIS, put on a rail system (most likely one of the Surefire rail systems that seem to be nice pieces) and use a regular Bushmaster bolt and carrier.
I know that companies like LMT have recently begun introducing some well received products that are worthy of a look, so I am taking suggestions on what to look at.
I want a basic carbine that is reliable, durable, relatively light and accurate enough to serve as a patrol rifle should I need to employ it in that role, but I personally prefer chrome lined barrels for longevity and ease of cleaning. I don't want to spend 1,500 dollars on gear queer stuff, but if there are options that give significant performance advantages over my original plans, I am all ears.
So I put it to you, learned members of ARFCOM, what do you suggest?
