Is it easier to remove the can after heavy fouling with the new stlye bi-lock compared to the older version?

I'll let you know as soon as I've tested it.

Hokie,
Richard suggested it would provide a coarse type of digital camo.    I just threw some different panels on for the pictures.  I'll probably ditch all the rail panels to reduce weight and bulk.

KS-
Will give velocity repor with range report, in a few days.

I put the Gen 1 Troy back on for simplicity.   I kinda like the PRI front.  Just put the circle on the target at close range..

Too black, when ya gonna blast it with Krylon?

I like the kit option.  The barrel looks pretty thick.  How well does it handle compared to your 17" MSTN without using the can on either rifle?

Tag for the range report. Nice rig Zak. Don't forget to let us know how the new Bi-lock works after it is hot and dirty.

It feels like the 17" MSTN is a little lighter, but they point about the same.   I thought they'd be close, so it's not a surprise.

I chose the 14.5 Noveske for its mass (to handle the suppressor & its heat) and because it had a midlength gas system.  The LaRue 13.2 was chosen for thermal shielding of the barrel.  The 14.5 has the steel LaRue barrel nut, while the 17" MSTN has the aluminum LaRue barrel nut (lighter).   The 17" MSTN was designed for light weight & accuracy first, while I designed this upper to basically shoot the piss out of with the suppressor on, and avoid burning me or the barrel too bad.

I'll now remove the Bilock from the 17" MSTN, put the QC comp back on, and put it back on 3Gun duty.

Makes sense, and the 17" came out nice.

Zak,

Did you mount the bilock yourself?  Does the new style bilock require exact timing as with the old one?

I welcomed the multi-colored panels as standard Zak_Smith fare.  Incredible looking (and I'm sure functioning) weapon...as is to be expected from you.  Yet again I am impressed, awed, and envious all at the same time.  I really should stop opening threads that you author; though I just can't avoid it, it's like the sun...and breasts.  Great job Zak.

I read somewhere one time that on a pistol a poliginal rifeled barrel gives you a boost in velocity about equal to an extra inch of barrel. I wonder if this is true with a rifle barrel and if so there would be a bigger boost. There could be a big advantage to using a barrel of this type if a 16inch barrel would have the same velocity as a 18inch or greater or a 14 as a 16 or more I could see a large reason to get a barrel of this type with a 556. Anyone have any velocity data?
Link Posted: 9/14/2005 7:58:16 AM EDT
[#14]
Here's an abbreviated AAR:

Even with the Y-M lightened carrier (from MSTN), it runs 100%.   Blast and recoil and noticably more (without the 'can), vs. a 16 or 17" rifle (w/ rifle can).   XM193 chronos at 3000fps, Black Hills blue box 75gr right at 2500fps.  Still need to get some accuracy results.

700_5R,

Not sure about the weight, but it's a little heavier than my 17" MSTN build.

I ditched the MRP because it didn't fill a useful niche compared to my other purpose-built uppers.    If I had had a suppressor then, I likely would have kept it for the same type of setup.

macros73,

Gemtech will warranty their cans against baffle strikes if they install and gauge the bilock, so I had them do it.  The new style (or the old style with A1 slits) does not have to be timed.   It's just cranked down on the barrel shoulder.

KogaShuko,

See velocity data in first paragraph.

Is the new bilock design any better at flash reduction or about the same?  Do you know of any conventionally rifled barrels of the same length to compare to see what kind of velocity the polygonal rifling added?

Kel said it was a better flash-hider than the old one, but I haven't actually tested any of them in full dark.

We can compare velocity from any 14.5" / M4 barrel.  So we just need some M4-barrel datapoints with BH 75gr reman and XM193 (can get lot numbers if it matters).

I will have to check when I get home but if I remember correctly my 14.5" barrel did 2500 with a 14.5" barrel so there would be no velocity gain.  Then again my memory could be screwed and it was 2400 and its a 100fps gain.  Big difference there.

Who or how did you do that last rifles color pattern. That is truly awesome! What did you use, reminds me of scales, but I bet the makes for nice breakup with some hunting skives on.

Looks like he did krylon airbrush in a light color and then took something like a net and put over it. Then he probably painted 3 large alternating light and dark vertical stripes down the weapon. Am I close?

The only way I could figure he did it to keep the likes in order.

re: camo.

I did it WAY more haphazardly than you guys probably think.

Materials were spray cans of Aluma-Hyde II and some coarse stiff net material from the hobby shop.  The base coat on the rifle was CB.  To get maximum contrast between ODG dots and the DT dots, I would do a swath of DT, and then shift the net just a bit and do a swath of ODG over it.    It is more effective to do a wider swath of the base light color coat and then do narrow swaths of the dark high contrast color to break it up, than try to alternate.

If a particular section ended up looking like crap, I just went over it again.

After that, I separated the upper and lower, stuffed them in the oven, and let them cure for about 4 hours at 170F.

[ link to LARGER image ]

Also, I didn't do anything to the barrel--just left it D.E. K-G as it was done by MSTN.   Aluma-Hyde II gets tacky when hot and the barrel is obviously covered with blowback from the 'can anyway.

Really?

I also think its funny, between the 4 rifles, how much all of that costed.
Mine in total was about 2600$, yours is more because of the 3 different optics, m93 and suppresor, Uxb's is the cheapest, and Mfingars has so much expensive shit i dont dare 2 guess how much it all costed him.

The different optics don't really count, since I stole them off other uppers for that pic.   I normally have no more than 2 QD optics per rifle, typically one ACOG and one Aimpoint/EOTech.
