A LARUE RAS II MOUNT - OPTIMUM FOR THE SET-UP. THANKS!
DON'T LET MIZZ HAWKETE CATCH YOU PUTTING A DIRTY OLD GAS GUN ON HER NICE SOFA! DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE ORIGINAL MODEL OF THE CASV WEIGHED? WES |
Main system, top and lower half, with no rails attached, was 14.5 oz. The rails ranged from .7 to 1.5 oz., depending on length.
Nice to see this system can be installed with the delta ring assembly in place.
Wes, how solid are the upper side rails, as good as a MRP for IR laser mounting?
Glad to see some of these "SIR" style forends making a comeback. Even all the great free float rails such as LT or DD seem to have some issues with repeatable POI with scope rings or IR lasers mounted on them, especially after getting the barrel nut hot. Do you think we'll see a continous top rail free float handguard from LaRue Tactical one day? Now that'll be the sh-t, don't you think? |
Fixed it for ya'! I knew it was valuable; that's why I returned it. |
THE SIDE RAILS BOLT UP NICELY. IT WOULD TAKE SOME SERIOUS INSTRUMENTATION TO TEST AND COMMENT RELIABLY ON WHAT FLEXES AND WHAT DOES NOT. IN MOST CASES (NOT ALL), THE M4 CONTOUR BARREL IS LESS RIGID THAN THE FREE FLOATING FOREARMS THAT SURROUND THEM, SO THE MOOT IS RATHER MOOT. HOW WELL CAN YOU GROUP WITH AN I.R. LASER UTILIZING NIGHT VISION, ANYWAY ??? I CAN ONLY DO 4 MOA ON A GOOD NIGHT. I'M HAPPY WITH THAT, TOO, CONSIDERING THE REDUCED VISUAL ACUITY OF EVEN THE BEST NIGHT VISION AND THE SIZE OF THE I.R. DOT. I WILL READILY AGREE THAT SCOPE RINGS DO NOT BELONG ON THE HANDGUARD. TOP RAILS ON UPPERS VARY REMARKABLY IN HEIGHT. SO DO THEY ON SOME FORENDS! PLUS, AS YOU MENTION, HEAT CONDUCTION CAN ALSO EVENTUALLY HAVE A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT. IF THE SPECIAL OPS COMMUNITY ASKS LARUE FOR SOMETHING, THEY WILL GET IT. AND IT WILL NO DOUBT BE THE HEAT. |
Is this going to be offered for the midlength gas systems?
-sigadvantage- |
I actually like the Abrams/VLTOR for-end. A few ounces doesn't mean too much to me and since the barrel nut is covered I have an interest in the rail. The only thing I would change is to make the top rail a bridge like the RAS2 but I think I could accomplish that myself.
ETA: fixed spelling |
WHAT WOULD BE THE ADVANTAGE IN DOING THAT? MOUNTING A TA01NSN/TA-31 IN THE USUAL LOCATION?
WES |
Yes, that and an Eotech (minus the rear BUIS of course). |
Wes, in the latest photo you've got a bunch of removable rail panels in a plastic bag. Who makes those?
John |
Will the vltor be able to clear the LW 5.56C-P Gas-Piston System?
+1 - I wouldn't mind changing out my PRI/ARMS SPR PEQ-2-3 on my SPRish setup as I am done with ARMS products (at least until they start using better materials...i.e. forged or billet aluminum instead of cast aluminum) |
THERE ARE NO PLANS FOR A RIFLE LENGTH VERSION.
HOWEVER, THERE WAS SOME DISCUSSION REGARDING A MID-LENGTH VERSION FOR THE CIVILIAN MARKET. I SUSPECT VLTOR WILL FOCUS PRIMARILY ON SELLING THE CARBINE LENGTH SYSTEM TO THE MILITARY. WES |
Funny you should mention that. I found a Std. Aimpoint mount in my stash with bronze a colored lever!! I was like a kid finding a hidden present after Christmas. |
Nice system. I've got the old version on my 9mm AR with an Aimpoint and 22M68 (no spacer.) I like it well enough, but still prefer the "standard" FF tubes from DD or Larue.
Also, I can say that the Old Version CAS-V + LMT Rail Mount M203 + M781 practice round = BAD JUJU!! Those little "nubs" at the back that the lower half pivoted on sheared right off after two M781 shots. It looks like the update takes care of that.
Some of us do! |

Abrams bought VLTOR, fomr what I ahev heard. This systems looks nioce, I think I need one ! |
Wes,
What will NSWC put on the muzzle and what will be the barrel lengths? |
THE SAME AS USUAL, WHATEVER THEY PLEASE, WOULD BE MY FIRST THOUGHT. I HAVE NO HARD INFO ON EITHER.
MY GUESS WOULD BE ON A CQB 10.3" AND KAC M4 QD COMP. YOU MIGHT SEE 14.5" M4 UPPERS, TOO. YES, ABRAMS DID INDEED BUY VLTOR. BUT ERIC KINCEL IS STILL THERE, JUST IN TUCSON ,NOW. WES |
I bought one of these today from a local store....they had 5, I got the last one.
Then, I went searching here for it.....Kinda backwards, I know. |
That is noteworthy and is how the Scout light seems to be mounted in your photo. |
I'll post the hell out of some pics and reviews when I get mine in 5 days. Stupid weekend slowing down my shipping. By the way, Mr. Wes from MTSN kicks ASS! I ordered one of these earlier this afternoon and it has already been shipped. That, right there, is service.

Here's one of the first 200 in Navy hands:

Interesting use of the LaRue mount on the M-14. |
I'm trying to absorb all the gear in that pic...
10.3" upper with KAC flash hider and VLTOR CASV-EL, Grip-Pod in front with an insight Tech M6X, AN/PEQ-2A on the side. ARMS #40 flip-up sight, LaRue SPR-E mount holding a S&B Short Dot CQB optic... In front of that a Mk 14 with ITI m6X and another LaRue SPR-E holding some scope I can't ID.. |
Not a S&B....that's a Trijicon TR21 AccuPoint 1.25-4x24 scope...I'm surprised that they're using the amber reticle (at least it looks like that to me) www.trijicon.com/user/parts/products1.cfm?PartID=103&back_row=0&categoryID=5 |

I and all my Operators greatly appreciate the effort Mark and his crew put in to this, modifying his design (SPR) to fit my requirements resulting in the SPR-E. The SPE-E was designed to mount the TR21 (not S&B) with proper eye relief on the AR platform and the MK14 simply by changing scope orientation. Vltor also must be thanked for redesigning their rail system to fit my requirements, that I covered in a post already. Out. 2011BLDR |
In the TR21 I found a majority of my testers felt that the “Amber” is superior across the whole operational light spectrum and vastly Superior in LOW LIGHT and IR Night Vision capability. The guys that have the Red test ones want them replaced with Amber. There is a great thread on optics for CQB to intermediate ranges in the optics section. Out. 2011BLDR |

it's from ages 13-17, although there's a navy league cadet corps that one can join from 11-14... judging from their patches, they are sea cadets (13 and over). i was in the cadet corps during high school, and it was an eye-opening experience. i have the highest respect for all of the military personnel that took the time to take us under their wings. i've always loved firearms, and was taught how to strip, clean, and reassemble 1911s, m14s, 226s, and m16s... of course, they may have been taking advantage of my eagerness to learn. not many people can say that they've shot m16s (full auto, not the tri-burst) while they were in high school. especially highschoolers in california! kinda wish i was back in high school now. seems like the kids these days get to play with even cooler hardware!!! |
How much height does it add to the top rail, as compared to the ARMS SIR?
Looks like I got some reading to do |
Mounting optics on the M14 platform by mounting the SPR-E backwards is pretty neat. I like that, any feedback from how well it holds up and works?
Is my moniter messed up or is that m14 painted red and white? If it IS red and white, why?
Is that really the CASV-EL? For some reason, it looks longer? How long has the navy been buying them?
LS |
+1 |
That is a MK14. The SAGE CHOPMOD stock, the TR21/22 and the SPR-E all complement each other in this setup. Changing one of the three would result in something that doesn’t work. The only complaint I have is we need more MK14’s ASAP the optics and lasers are on hand awaiting delivery of rifles. Out. 2011BLDR |
Anyone? |
I MEASURE THE SIR RAIL AT 0.460".
THE VLTOR RAIL LOOKS LIKE 0.475" TO ME. SO, ESSENTIALLY THE SAME. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |
