The XM177E2 used the straight slip ring. The canted delta ring didn't appear until the M16A2 came along.]

Wrong, the delta ring was introduced with the XM177E2 series in 1967. It was not used on the M16/M16A1 rifle or carbines(Model 653).

The first 10-15 XM177E2's that Colt delivered came with the earlier straight delta ring, the rest were delivered with the tapered delta ring that’s standard on the A2.

Quite a few XM177E1 were overhauled and had the bbls replaced with 11.5" XM177E2 bbls, sometimes the original delta rings were used.

The only M16A1 rifles I’ve seen with the tapered delta rings are M16A1's that had the uppers replaced in the late 1980’s with FN uppers( M16A1 or C7 uppers with FN 1/12 pencil bbls)

10??  Come on man, don't leave us hanging.  Edujamacate us  The only ones I know of are the box style (red for 20" & yellow for the carbines), the red round style, the "Hollywood" type that look like a regular flash hider....

The Hollywood type doesn't count, I'm talkin USGI.  You have the yellow box (M4) and the round one that I believe also fits the M249.  The first two BFA's for the M16 CLAMPED on using a claw that fit into the slots of the flash hider.  that leaves 6 variations of the little red box.  More on these later unless anyone else knows.........(hint, if you look through a pile of USGI BFA's you will usually be able to see at least a few variations)

Since The Black Rifle is mentioned, I have a question concerning the contents. It's very clear that The Black Rifle considers the Model 602 to be the XM16E1 with a forward assist. However, every other reference I can find, including The Black Rifle II and Edward C. Ezell's own Small Arms of the World lists the Model 603 as the XM16E1 and M16A1 and that the Model 602 was an AR-15 without a forward assist. So is this an error in The Black Rifle?

As far as I know the 602 is the Colt designation for the XM16E1 which both have forward assist.  601 or "01" (military designation AR15) certainly did not have FA.  M16A1 is the military(Army) designation of the model 603 and M16 is the military (Air Force) designation of the model 604.  I could be wrong since my main expertise is with cleaning kits and blank firing adapters!

602 did not have a forward assist. The 603 did. The 604 was produced for the Air-Force and did not have a forward assist.

If the 602 did not have a forward assist than what was it??  What made it different from the 601 and 604???   If it was what the Army designated XM16E1 it did have FA, so what Colt model would the XM16E1 be????

Colt 602 = AR15
Colt 603 = XM16E1
Colt 604 = M16 for Air Force

I think you are right!  I checked out some sources and none list the 602 as having FA.  But if 603=XM16E1 what is the M16A1??? Is that also a 603???

Most sources consider both the XM16E1 and M16A1 to be the Model 603.
