What are the differences between these two?  I assume that the big honkin lock nut assembly is an improvement, but just how "dark ages" is the GenII?

I like the look of the GenII much better, and I'm thinking it might be possible to have a rail made to fit the existing holes that would mate up with the flat-top, leaving no gap.
But I've only seen them with the ARMS rail, would the GenII stay indexed without it?

Thanks

Gen II should be okay as the forend uses two pins which index on the barrel nut (which is indexed itself by the gas tube).
