If you have a well-used upper that has visible wear, should it be changed out when the bolt carrier is replaced? What about if the upper has no visible wear?

What do you mean by visible wear?

If they pin holes have become elongated, and there is lots of slop, then by all means.

I haven't really seen a well-worn upper. I don't know where they wear. I suspected that they wear pretty good where the bolt carrier slide rails slide over time. Are you saying that the inside of an upper receiver doesn't wear typically?

Correct, as long as it is well lubed and relatively clean

Some guns that have been shot repeatedly in adverse climates with very fine sand can get beat to rat shit but civilian or LE guns usually dont have those issues.

Kevin's got it exactly right. My SP1 colt, with over 6000 rounds thru it in the past 25 years, has most, but not all of the finish worn off the inside of the upper where the carrier ribs rub; but it doesn't even have a noticable groove in the metal yet [:D].

Treat it right, and an AR will outlast you.
