I dont know why but I purchased a r6601 new in 1991 and it has no fence or bayo lug.

What's the serial number range for yours? This one is in the low 027xxx.

I purchase my 6601 in June 1991. It does not have the raised fence. Serial number is SP249xxx.
This was a time of transition for Colt. New ownership. They were simply using up the last of the SP1 receivers before they switched to the newer A2 style receivers. |

I have a 6601 that I bought in I think '91, serial is MH013xxx and has the raised fence...
As fruit_of_the_looms pointed out, Colt was in the middle of a transition, and was using whatever parts available to manufacture AR's at the time... |

Thanks for the responses. I understand there's actually two models of the 6601? Some don't have a fence, some do. The ones without are called a slabside? The slabside types typically have the large front pin and the others have the small front pin (more desirable?). All this Colt crap sure gets confusing. Does this sound correct?

Homeboy, you are partially correct. Many of the slab-sided versions did have the large front pin, but so did many of the rifles with the raised magazine fence. There are no hard and fast rules with Colts, especially with the transition rifles. As a general rule, if you want a small pin and re-enforced lower you are probably looking at the MH06xxxx range or higher, at least from what I have seen.

The Colt Lightweight Sporters 7.62 have both the small hole and mag fence. Well at least mine does. As long as you don't care about the 7.62 markings on the lower you can put whatever upper you want on it.
