I have been talking with Chris Knipstein

www.geocities.com/chris_knipstein/

about making a slip on fake suppressor for my SPR clone, he wonders if anyone else is interested in something like that. He said if he got a few deposits he would buy a knurling tool and make it look just like the real SPR suppressor with the same dimensions.
opsinc.us/photo.php?photoId=12thsprmbs.01.jpg

Anyone interested?

Here is pricing information to the models that you requested similar in
design to the Ops cans. The pricing would be the same as my current models
just with the extra fee for knurling on the O.D.

20.00 for a pre-ban model not knurled
28.00 for a post-ban model not knurled
28.00 for a pre-ban knurled model
36.00 for a post-ban knurled model

6.00 shipping.

Multiple Quantities would have a discount and free shipping.

Material for this size is in stock and delivery time would be minimal after
payment is received.

Preban threaded models can be threaded any size. The standard for the AR
series is 1/2"-28.

Post-Ban models would have 4 set screws that align it and hold it on
tightly.

Chris

Here are the first pics of my Chris Knipstein Custom SPR Fake Suppressor. http://davkenrem.net/sprcan1.JPG http://davkenrem.net/sprcan2.JPG This is before the finish goes on. Looks pretty good. I should have it by next week. I'll post pics of it on the rifle. http://davkenrem.net/12thsprmb.jpg Here's the real thing.

Before he starts selling one of these, and anyone buys one, it better be acompanied by a letter from the ATF and their blessing! Anything like this has to be sent to them before going into the market place. Others have thought they didn't need to and ended up with a bunch of ATF nuckle draggers at their door. Jack

Notes on the manufacture of these: By all means if anyone is concern about the BATF, it is me. This is why I have choosen to make them the way that I do. If you go to my website, you'll see how I do them. I make them in a way that they cannot be made into one. These are soild rods. The only thing that is done is face the ends off, drill and tap the barrel hole or thread, then turn round and drill the small projectile hole. These are not hollowed out or made from tubing.

Sure, I make no bones about the fact that I built this rifle because of the way it looks. And the suppressor gives me the completed look that can't have because I own a post ban and can't afford even if it was pre-ban. I don't need guns for protection or work they are just toys to me. How many guys bought SIR's and RIS/RAS forends, lights, and lasers? They look cool. I'm not gonna make up some story about "how I my life life or someone else's may depend on my gear" bull stories. Or a "I need this tricked out M4 in case the SHTF" story. I fell in love with the way the rifle looked when we saw the first pics and I wanted as close as I could get to it w/o breaking the bank. Yeah,"cause it looks cool to me". "That's right I'm with Underdog, and I'm not afraid to admit it either " LOL LOL LOL

Well not to start a religious debate but I definatly don't subscribe to that Golden Rule. A few toys are fine but they are all gonna burn.

Wes has set me up with his friend for this fake one. It has the same dimension and appearance as the real thing and actually mount on the SPR barrel thread and rest on the collar. I think I now have as close as the original Crane picture above as I can get (or may be better, since I have the real Parker Hale and the bipod mount). A very expensive crown protector indeed.

From the very first official SPR pic, it appeares that the SPR was using the Versapod, not Parker Hale.

You are correct. To quote one of the SPR contractor, "the Versapod is a Chinese term for POS". There is a 50% failure rate on the Versapod in the field. That's why I said mine is better than the original.

hycheng, Let me just say you have built a beautiful SPR. Its also exactly like mine, except I still need a Leupold M3 LR. I know you had a fun time finding that ARMS#42 Versa Pod mount. It took me several calls to ARMS to locate one.
Link Posted: 10/15/2003 8:23:39 PM EDT
Very Nice rifles! Any chance that somebody might do a 9mm version? I have been thinking about doing a 9mm AR but having a 16" barrel sticking off the end for a pistol cartridge seems a bit much to me. Putting a fake can on it (mounting it against the sight tower) might give it a much shorter look. P.S. If I did a 9mm AR it would just be for looks too [:D]

Thanks for the compliments. Actually ARMS were pretty responsive in my case. As for the Mod 0, his twin sister Mod 1 is not too bad neither. Just waiting for the TS-30 scope. [beer]

When is the new TS-30 due out? I've read its still a long way away, so I'm going to just stick with the M3. ARMS was very friendly and helpful during my #42 hunt. They were just not in stock the first couple of times I called to order one. I know the Versa Pod has a bad reputation, but I too wanted the original SPR look. I'm hoping that the ARMS mount will erase some of its problems. I also plan on performing the modification recommended on snipercountry.com, they seem to have a handle on its problems. If my modified Versa Pod gives me any problems, I can always just buy a Harris and be done with it. I took the Versa Pod on as a challenge. Link to Versa Pod modification: http://www.snipercountry.com/Versmod.htm
Link Posted: 10/15/2003 9:44:17 PM EDT
TS30 has been out for a long time. Its just the MRM3 is late. Since it is marketed as Mark4 series, it may cost more than the SPR upper. [furious] I have a different versapod mod than snipercountry. It works fine for me with the reduced canting. Check out my thread on the versapod mod here : http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=18&t=164418&w=searchPop

I didn't know the TS-30 was already available to civilians. Please send me a link for the MRM3. I'll have to look over your Versa Pod mod, it certainly looks like it will work. Snipercountrys modification might be a better route because it can be constantly adjusted.

Actually MARK4 3-9x36mm MR (M3 version) is supposed to be the civilian equivalent of TS-30. But I don't know if Leupold has decided on what the spec and pricing will be. If TS-30 and MRM3 share the same spec, by law they cannot sell it below what the government pays. And I am afraid I will get sticker shocked. They may choose to lower the spec and give the civilian market a price break. TS-30 will probably be only available as surplus in the future if the TS-30 to TS-30A2 upgrade happens. We should take this to another thread.

"Please pardon my ignorance, but why would you want a fake supressor? Just for looks?" That's my thought exactly, and Why do all these people pay big dough for the OPS INC externally threaded muzzle break and barrel collar when there is nothing to mount to it? I don't know why with all the positive attention OPS Inc doesn't just license the rights to build a limited number of their cans to an outside of state class II MFG so that civilians can buy them. (SF SPR orders as far as I know were very small like 3500 rifles and that would mean 3500 suppressors (a figure that should be easy to equall in civilian sales).

Fake can is the only thing I can keep in Kaliban land. As for Ops Inc, it is a small business run by an old man deep in the woods who doesn't like the internet or deal with too many people. The government contract works out fine for him.
Link Posted: 10/16/2003 4:57:35 PM EDT
Yeah I understand why he doesn't bother with the civilians but it sucks for all those people who just have to have the OPS INC look and what do they pay for the Break, Collar and $200 fake can? $500? $600? Better to pay $850-$1200 and get a AAC M4-2000, Troy CQB SPEC, or KAC M4 QD. It doesn't look the same but it does reduce sound.
Link Posted: 10/16/2003 9:37:57 PM EDT
The funny part is, the airsoft guys already cloned the ops inc brake. And they will probably come out with the fake can soon.

Thats a dam nice copy. I was just comparing it to my real one. I can't see any difference, at least on looks alone.
