I'm putting together thoughts for an Ultra Lightweight AR and I'm wondering how best to achieve this.

My current plan is

Cav Arms Lower
Bushmaster Lightweight 16" barrel with milled front sight base
Flat top (of course)

A setup like this might hit 5.5 lbs

Questions would be:

Where can more weight come off?

Are free float tubes lighter then standard plastic handguards?

What about sighting?
Optics would require something very light like a Compact ACOG at 5.6 oz. or maybe a red dot window type sight like a JPoint or Docter Optics at ~2oz.

Any other ideas?

i am doing a lightweight 20" project and last week ordered a hiperform FF handguard.

seems like a cool product. for 99 bucks they offer carbine length with additional material removed in barrel nut area for further weight reduction.

A1 upper would weigh almost a half pound less than a flat top + optic + back up sight.

Colt C profile bolt carrier.

Bushmaster Vmatch handguard eliminates the barrel nut thus weighs less.

No forward assist would drop weight if you can find an upper like that, no brass deflector would do it too.

Make sure you get the newer lighter and shorter Cav Arms lower not the old one.

Since Bushmaster will be building carbon fiber rifles Iwould just wait though [;)]

Just saw the new Bushmaster/Professional Ordnance news.  That will definitely be the direction I go in, provided I can get a forward assist and a chrome lined barrel.  Some things I just can't go without

But 3.9 lbs. !!!!

If you really want lightweight the get the 16" Super lightweight barrel. Its incredibly light.

I guess about the same as the sight, around 2.5 oz.

I don't use the guard any more.  The OKO is at least as tough as the C-More, and they don't even offer a shield.
