VFGs work better if you are in positions, cover and corners where you actually have to worry about shooting someone and getting shot back...   angled handguards, hand stops and generally running around in wide open territory with your support hand stretched out as far as freakin possible are great in 3 gun games.

I used to make fun of the old timers for having a bunch of outdated shit, but now that I am getting old I am seeing the same happen to me.  Who wants to replace a bunch of optics when the old ones work fine...

I like my Aimpoint's to have 4MOA and that's the way I like it!!!   and no sissy range finder crap blazoned all over the recticle, granddad had 2 perpendicular lines crossing down the middle and that's all he needed.

I know dozens of active duty soldiers that would disagree with you, AFGs are used for plenty of serious shooting.
In fact I have seen more of those used the last 3 years of my career when I was active duty over VFGs.

But this is the early 2000s thread so AFGs don't count here since they did not exist yet!

Was just telling another friend/member the other day how I still want an S.I.R. rail (as I have for years) just haven't ever come across one for the right deal/trade.

S.I.R. rails were never popular, despite ARMS' full page ad I recall from several popular gun rags.

They still made the best A2 carry handle rail (#2), M14 base (#18), and their #17 was extremely versatile.

It was super cool when I got my Surefire M952 and M962 with the #17 QD base. I could detach the lights in the daytime to save weight. Awesome.

Pair a S.I.R. with a PRI folding front sight and you’ll have my dream setup of yesteryear.

This thread has me feeling nostalgic as heck, already bought a Lone Star grip for my RECCE thanks to you guys.

Lone Star grips with Ergo's The Gapper is the perfect grip setup for an AR.

Edit.... frakking auto correct. It is "THE GAPPER, not THE TAPPER".

Because it's round, the donkey dick let's you hold it from any angle, unlike most of the other stuff that forces you to use it one way.  That why I like the KAC best.

Those may regain some popularity thanks to InRange TV’s ‘What Would Stoner Do’ project. Not sure I completely agree with their build so far but I’ve regained interest in that lower.

Yup, never thought it would sunset either.  And 6.8SPC!  I remember pouring over articles to learn about the new “super cartridge”.

For me, I remember thinking at the time that the RRA DEA carbine was the f*cking ultimate.

GUNS Magazine DEA Carbine Feature

Now looking at it, my favorite part about the article is where they say ”It was a foregone conclusion that ‘stuff’ was going to be hung on the gun”...

Damn. I've been unknowingly building a DEA carbine and didn't even know it - GG&G rear sight, non-FF quad rail and all.

VFGs were mandatory, as were quad rails. Tritium sights all the things!

I have a picture of that I still sometimes use as wallpaper on my laptop. It was my goal for a while but by time that build got underway I ended up with DD 9.0 and the PRI flip up. That upper cost me a grand. I could do better now with a 400 dollar PSA upper.

So popular they're out of stock for all but the green, pink, and the fully populated black receivers:

$129 stripped, zombie green or pink @ this time, $225 for a fully populated black lower.

I'm going through the late 90s/early 00s videos from Gunsite and Lenny Magill. Trip to the past. 16", pencil profile barrels, 60 Lumen Xexon Bulbs, fixed A2 Stocks, and chopped carry handles with grafted rails on the receiver to co-witness Aimpoints.

Bike inner tube works real well for that. Just get a couple of pieces and trim them and overlap until you get the desired thickness.

Does the carbon 15 count?

Also my old Olympic Arms Sporter. 16" carbine non-threaded with goofy thumb hole stock like a mak90. The original $500 ar-15.

I still really like VFG's. More use as a handstop or the thumbreak. I tried going to slim, and I found out just why I quickly went to the VFG.

However, it's not the right and left rubber pieces, but it's the rubber band style one that wraps around the entire lower.
