Hello All, I've been visiting this site for a couple months now and decided to join :) its very informative and looks like the members are helpful. My question is about a AR i purchased from a friend and haven't had much luck identifying the upper. any help would be Great! an "M" on upper and " 5 56" on barrel bout all i know

essential arms preban lower. don't know about the upper or barrel.

it was called the j-15 lower. chech out their web site.

Nice EA lower. Not sure on the M upper. It is a preban lower, so that is a good thing. Doesn't matter with you in MN, but it would be worth more if you ever sold it.

The barrel is an Olympic Arms. The M on the upper just denotes that Mueller Industries produced the raw forging. Oly might have finished & machined it, but there's no way to know for sure unless it was purchased from them as a complete upper group. HTH.

i'm also going to agree with the olympic assessment, many of the olys i've seen are simply marked 556 in that old typewriter style

unless you have some sentimental value attached to the XM177/CAR15 configuration, the 11.5" barrel with 5.5" fake moderator is generally a poor choice for a general purpose AR setup. all the downsides of an 11.5" SBR with none of the SBR benefits.

Also some brands even come with a slip over FH
So one could have a longer barrel with the looks of a CAR

Ive also seen barrels with the FH cut outs. Or all 1 barrel.

I'll be building a new AR this winter so I've been looking around for a better setup for longer range and varmint hunting I'm Thinking something like this
