‘Surplus’ FN M16A4 Review (unbiased opinion)

[Last Edit: m24shooter] [#2]
Been going through this whole thread. As I go, I’m pulling out the info from Augee, FDC, R0N, CD, and others on technical points and putting them into a single doc that I review when I’m more sober and/or not working.
My first A4gery was built around 2000/2001. Not long after, because everything was trending shorter and more carbiney and it was a bitch to pull out (that’s what she said) a rifle from a Vic, I handed it off to my brother and just started doing biners except for my SDM build.
I have regretted getting rid of my A4gery with the M5 rail constantly since. At least I kept the stabby, M68, and MATech.
So now I’ve dragged out the A4 components I have on hand. I’ve got a Colt A4 that I need to find a new FFL to transfer since my previous shit the bed, and I’m set.
I’m still looking for my silent sling and GI sling adapter kit (the web strip with D ring and wire loop triangle) and see if I can find the old stock mag pouch.
I found an old A2 upper and I have a couple of unpurposed A2 lowers, so yeah I know how that’s going to play out.
But here’s what will be going on the Colt. A KAC M5 with VFG and covers, a MATech, an M68CCO in the flat mount QRP, and an old M9 dolphin sticker.
And because pic thread, here’s where we start.

Seriously, thanks to all that have contributed. This has been a fountain of info. If this thread had existed when I had my first clone, I probably would have kept it. There are some outstanding contributors here.

Sling you are looking for was for the M203 combo.  Might help your search.

That’s the one. I have one or two of them in a locker somewhere still in the package, just haven’t located them yet.

Looked like an A4 on my phone.
That was supposed to be on the push into Baghdad. Marines still using A2s then? I thought they had transitioned to the A4 by then.

This has come up a number of times here, and so far, the only selector that anyone has found with the correctly shaped tick mark is the 3-position selector for Schmid Tool, which matches the one on military rifles.

M16 Full Auto Safety Selector

Lots of people here have bought other selectors only to find that the tick mark doesn’t quite match the military version.

If you remove the “fin” marked in red on this diagram, it will act as a SAFE-SEMI-SEMI selector in the three positions. Unmodified, it will be SAFE-SEMI-SAFE.

While that selector has the correct tic mark

It has a longer "arm" compared to the A1 and A2 selectors

Thus, I only use it for A4s, and M4 and M4A1s late 1990s to present.

From early in the thread (and a few points in-between), specifically to the Jul 97-Sep 99 period:
Their safety selectors, while having a "tick" to indicate the mode of operation, were only single-sided (no ambidextrous safeties were in use) & the "lever" itself extended from the edge of the safety rather than from the middle as currently issued ones do.

Type 1 Safety Selector - Is a non-ambidextrous selector with a lever/paw on the left side that extends only to the edge of the selector base, with a "Tick" or divot mark on the right side to indicate the mode of operation. These safeties can vary in color from light gray to midnight black (earlier ones being more grey - later ones more black). DPMS, White Oak Armory, & CMT (among other brands) make these types of safeties.

Type 2 Safety Selector - Is like above except the lever/paw extends to the center of the safeties' base rather than only to the edge of it, and they tend to be more black in color (the more recently manufactured they are). Colt tends to make these. PSA offers these, though occasionally they have the type ones instead.

@m24shooter

So, Marine infantry (2/7) from 04-09, my first rifle was an A2 in the fleet for like a month then I got the A4.  Didn’t deploy with the A2.  Also used A2s in boot and SOI but that’s different.  If that was Marines in Baghdad that would’ve been before my time for what that’s all worth.

Copy, thanks.
There wasn't much for info on the pic when I found it other than Marines on the way to Baghdad. And it really does look like an A2 handle when you zoom in on it.
No pic for this one, but my Colt A4 should be here Friday and the clonification will begin.

Odd question - but my AR15A4 has a shiny front handguard cap instead of a parkerized one.

Anyone else’s Colt like this?

Just picked up my A4.

Square forge markings.

Ambi safety has to go.

Barrel stamping.

FSB marking.

The rollmark no longer has “CARBINE” on it, which is nice.

Switched out the selector but I need one with the correct tick.

Need to clean up the stock with some CLP and there’s some gunk from packing to clean up. Should have the rest of my panels, a sling, and some other stuff here tomorrow and hopefully go shoot.

Got the KAC panels cut. Put the silent sling on with the top sling adapter, but this is only until I can find my Blackhawk stock mag pouch with the sling attachment.

Worked on some other stuff too, so it turned into the attack of the clones.

Alright, so here's a question for you guys..  I've got a TAMCN tag (E1442).. I've seen other UID tags placed fairly low on the magwell of the lower, but I can't find but a couple of photos with a TAMCN tag, and none of which are of military rifles, only clones.  I don't know if there's a "correct placement" of it, or if it matters at all.

For example, this is where I have seen it placed on both images I've come across: https://preview.redd.it/cz4txvoupel81.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=8d402407806b436f634a14a58acb68afe901e7c8

But, then with others, there are many variations on placement:

My first attempt at an M16A4gery.  Lemme know how I'm doing, since I've never been in the armed forces?  Specifically, going for a USMC issued rifle:

Parts I have:

PSA M16A4 marked lower (ewww, but it'll work until I can get an 80%, have it engraved for an FN logo/Govt Property marks, mill it, anodize it, etc.)
FN marked, Cerro Forge upper
Knight's M5 RAS/Knight's broomhandle VG
Spectre Gear sling/mag pouch
Schmid lower parts kit w/ S-marked hammer, S-marked selector & correct selector indicator mark

Parts left to acquire (if people know where to get the hookups, I'd be down for information):

FN 20" 1/7, F-marked A2 FSB
Trijicon TA31RCO
FN BCG
buffer, spring, forward assist, dust cover.
The 'little' bullshit.

Link Posted: 8/24/2022 12:56:05 PM EDT
[#39]
Where did all of the M5 RAS go?  I'm trying to finish my rifle and I can't source one at a reasonable (sub $300) price.

My rifle is a Colt AR-15A4 with: Specter sling; KAC 25650 rear sight; TA31RCO in LaRue LT799 mount.  All I need is the RAS!  I took it back out to the range yesterday along with my Colt 6920 SOCOM.  I love these 20" guns!  Compared to the 14.5" HBAR it shoots so smooth and light.  The "sproinggg" reminds me of the 80's too.

Where'd you get the lpk from with the short safety (instead of the hotdog style) and the correct tick mark?

Does anyone else know where to get the correct safety? I saw there was a post not too long ago, but the original link is dead.

My .002 is that initially that was what I was looking for, however with it being a "special" purchase for me and eventually being passed down I went with the Colt. I was issued an A2 and an A4 and neither had the rail, so that wasnt a factor.

I think 1700 is steep in normal times, but you'll soon forget the price. My A4 is my favorite of all of my favorites, I bought an RCO but I keep putting the carry handle back on it.

Buy it and shoot the piss out of it.
