Just got my Aero M16A4 lower in today. Need barrel, lower parts and buffer tube and I'm set. Begging the wife for the ACOG is turning out to be tricky.

Get one of these kits.  I ordered one for myself a few days ago, and I also have an Aero M16A4 lower waiting for it.

My MOS wasn't high speed or infantry so I never did any patrolling. Standing around pulling guard duty it wasn't horrible, an M4 would've been better but those all went to those units who would see action.

The front end looks like the Specter gear sling, the stock end not so much.

Is there any trick to identifying an A2 buttstock assembly as genuine Colt?

I’ve no reason to suspect that it’s not, but for what I paid for it I’d like to have “proof”,,, but there doesn’t appear to be any markings on it at all.

The buttstock itself, no. Unless it's old stock, I believe all modern Colt A2 buttstocks come with plastic trap doors. I can't tell a single difference between the Colt and PSA buttstocks I have used.

The rifle receiver extension should be gray in color versus black as supplied by every other company that I've seen.

The A2 spacer should be white/cream in color.

Buffer and spring, no clue. As long as the buffer is the proper weight (5.1oz. I believe), I wouldn't worry about it.

Lastly, the buttstock screw should have a red nylock patch on it.

Well, the screw does have that red stuff on it, but the buffer tube and A2 spacer are both black.

Huh.

On my pre B Colt A2 HBAR the tube spacer is aluminum, colored grayish/green colts type of finish they use back in the day. Here it's next to my FN M16 black plastic

Foam is yellow, the trapdoor is made out of aluminum and locking pin is steel

I have a legitimate Colt SPII buttstock from 1985 from a donor rifle. The spacer is gray on mine. there is red loctite. I have noticed without oil the stock will become an "ashy" feeling and very light gray but the butt will remain black

I've had my PSA CHF 20" rifle kit in for a week or so, but I haven't taken it to the range.  What's the best way/distance to zero the carry handle to have the flattest trajectory with 55gr ball?

Attachment Attached File

Attachment Attached File

I assembled it with an Aero M16A4 lower, and I supplemented the kit with a GI carry handle and some surplus A2 handguards.  I have a GI side sling swivel that I've been considering adding, too, but I think I'll save that until I eventually acquire an M5 RAS and ACOG.

I'm kind of bummed that the barrel doesn't have that slight relief cut on the last 1/2" of muzzle end before the threads, but I'll get over it.

Depending on your vitals zone radius of choice, probably the standard 36/300 zero. Bottom out the rear sight, adjust the front sight to impact 4-5" high at 100yds.

Just finished this one today. Had one similar years ago, but gave it to my brother who spent 8 years in the Marines.
Bushmaster lower
Diemaco upper
Colt 1/7 government barrel
Colt A1 butt stock due to its shorter length

So, with an A4 build, do folks use the mount that comes with the ACOG, or do y’all replace it with something else?

A couple years ago I picked up some GDI R-com E model quick release ACOG mounts when they were on sale for like $39. They have an NSN on them and I could swear I’ve seen pics of USMC with them.

I really like the mounts ACOGS used come in with, but I have seen the Marines use a throw lever type - two levers per mount

They're hard to find, but the original LaRue contract mounts (2005, 2006 ish?) were the LT622 SDO. They have two levers on the ejection port side, that stick out a bit further than modern LaRue mounts.

They're super cool for a USMC clone.
