TOTAL powder burn? At least 20" I'd guess. Otherwise, I'd recommend 16" - seems to be the best balance of multiple factors. |

I agree with the 16". Almost same velocity and accuracy without the extra weight of the 20" bbl

You do not define what optimum is. Optimum for what purpose? Your question cant be answered correctly without more information.

Somewhere between 10.5" and 24" I'd say.
For full powder burn it's looking like 24" (I think). For something not so heavy...20" or 18" give 98% velocity. For lighter and better swinging, 16" to 14.5". For as compact as you can go without completely hosing sub-50 yard lethality, 10.5"-11.5" |

You will gain velocity to at least 26", probably more. The question is more one of what length provides enough velocity for your task and is still handy.

You think the guys at Armalite might have thought about this when they scaled-down the AR10 to take a modified .222 Remington round? I think they settled on 20"
 Seriously, I have a couple A1 style rifles with 20" Colt USGI pencil barrels which are close to optimum for my "all around" purposes. The pencil barrel won't work for hard users (those who rupture regular M4 barrels), but they are light, handy and will take anything most civilians are likely to throw at them. If "optimum" means maximum velocity, then go 24" or longer. If it means accuracy, go heavier/stiffer. If it means compactness, then you have to go shorter or to a bullpup... |

20" with A-1 stock is the ticket for me. 20" gives you an edge in accuracy, velocity, reliability, recoil, parts wear and ammo selection.
