What is the purpose of having these rear spoiler sized fins on the bipod legs?

If its for heat transfer , seems like there would be better designs to serve that function.
If its for looks, yeah it does have that "tactical" look to it...but seems like that would be just more added bulk without much use.

That bipod was originally manufactured for use on the M60 light machine gun. When folded up, the "blades" acted as a handguard to the barrel and gas chamber, to keep a soldier from getting burned. It may be that so many were manufactured that it was easier and cheaper to start retrofitting new designs with existing bipods. It also ended up on the Barrett M82A1.

It's for added stability when shooting into a headwind.
