BCM and Colt are the only two manufacturers I know of that supply proof tested AR barrels to the US Commercial market. There maybe others I am missing?
The Bushmaster barrel making process is described in great detail in the January 2006 issue,of SAR. No mention of proofing on a lot basis or otherwise. |

Well, "midlength" rules out Colt, so looks like you'll be getting a BCM barrel. I'm eyeing one of their uppers myself.

I think Denny's "Operator" barrels are proof tested and they are medium weight mid-lengths.

Yes, we proof load (HPT - High Pressure Test) every BCM barrel with the M197 cartridge.
We then Magnetic Particle Inspect (MPI) every single barrel. Mil-Spec is a 2 part procedure. Part #1 is HPT and Part #2 is MPI. Often the term "MP" or similar is discussed here as similar to milspec. But that is only half the procedure. The complete procedure is HPT and then MPI. Below is out ad copy from our website at this link HPT / MP Inspected Barrels Military specifications require that barrels undergo a HPT (High-Pressure Test) load as a part of quality assurance procedures. Commonly referred to as a proof load, the M197 HPT is rated for 70,000 psi. BCM barrels are proof loaded and then MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspected) to detect any possible flaws in the barrels surface. The barrels are MP inspected with both circular and longitudinal magnetic fields per ASTME1444-01 (current Mil-Spec) to assure a high quality finished product. All BCM barrels are marked HP MP as our proof load marking. |

Just got an E-mail back from CMMG, the MP on their barrels means Magnetic Particle tested, no proofing. |

DAMN!!! You guys ROCK!!! Thanks to everyone for the info and input. I know it seems a bit "snobby" but I am a true, blue Q.C. freak ( well, to the best of my ability)....a lot of that has to do with what I do for a living ( making airbag systems ) so I am stuck on getting as close to "mil spec" as I can on my builds. I realize that unless we are dealing with true M-16s or Gov't Contract AR-15s that "mil spec" is a relative term. Nonetheless, I am striving, on my builds, to be as close to Colt/G.I. as I can be when certain Colt/G.I. parts aren't readily available...hence the "proof testing" question.

ETA: Bravo Company, I sure wish YOU GUYS had a CMT contract for C7 uppers....let's just say the "mil spec" (  ) C7 uppers I got from another source were not mil spec by any means. Even the reorder I made was still NOT to MY specs that I requested, though I was told they would be......yes, my build went together well, but that still ticks in the back of my mind....By looking at your site, it certainly appears you guys actually KNOW what "mil spec" is. Keep up the good work!!!!! |

I should point out that while DDI does all of their barrels, as far as I know, STAG only did MPI on their limited run.

Commercial MP markings mean Magnetic Particle tested. That is why Bravo marks theirs differently, to clarify theirs are High Pressure tested, hence the HP marking. USGI barrel markings are a different matter. |

Kind of, obviously you do the magnetic particle inspection after proofing. But magnetic particle inspection alone will cull near 100 percent of the bum barrels you are going to find under such processes. |

Another thing to look at when conducting HPT and more specifically MPI is the acceptance/rejection criteria.
What consitutes a rejection? A crack? (what size?), a seam (what size?), a stringer (what size?), a inclusion (what size?) While I do agree that much of the additional mil-specs will not provide any additional utility to the average shooter, it does help to differeciate between product lines for the customer looking for a product that meet a very specific criteria. |

Thanks.  I've purged my collection of LMT and CMMG stuff on the EE anyway. I'm down to one Colt SOCOM and a Denny's Operator. Not to mention the crap I built in my early years, that will get purged on the EE soon as well. My next rig will come from BCM.  |

I just called LMT and spoke with Ray at (309) 787-7151 and he said that LMT does proof test their barrels. Don't take my word for it call them and see!

I lost interest in the LMT when I found that they had dowel pins instead of taper pins and no park under the FSB.
