They are already going to be the proper size when you buy a barrel/upper in most cases. Some situations dictate having it drilled out a bit larger, like having a gas port enlarged when chopping a 16" to a 11.5".

As an end user, the biggest way to affect the cycle rate is probably using heavier buffers. Gas port modifications are generally only done when changing the length of the barrel. As a rule, I would not recommend that the shooter makes a habit of modifying gas port sizes, unless perhaps if they are planning on solely shooting very low powered ammo. |
