Many people rave about using china markers in assorted colors.

Many moons ago I used good old Crayola crayons on a Glock slide.  Really pushed  the crayon material into the lettering but tried to not go back and forth too much to minimize clean up.  Used windex and a paper towel to clean the extra on the slide.  Looked pretty cool until I used a ultra-sonic cleaner tank....all gone after that!

I saw a post yesterday in which a guy said he used his daughter's crayons.  Being that it would fill the lettering and unless you picked at it, coloring with a crayon could work.

Good luck.
