To get technical, to be an M4 it has to be select fire, military purchase, A2 or removeable carrying handle, standard A2 flash suppressor, and black GI hardware.

So, what is your point?  Mostly, we own AR15s that resemble the military's version of the AR15, the M16 or M4.

Ahem - that was never a M4A1.  That wasn't even an "M4gery".  It was a carbine with an A1 upper and M4 barrel.  The M4A1 is a flat top receiver, 14.5" m4 barreled carbine, with safe, semi, and full auto.

Now it needs CAR HG's, an A1 pistol grip and 3 pos stock.

I prefer the 14.5" barrel over the 16", but it still looks great. A barrel alone doesn't make or break the cosmetics of a nice carbine.

As for the M4A1 nomenclature, it is confusing. It has a flat-top upper, even though it is called an A1. The original M4 carbine was 3-shot burst. When they changed it to full-auto, this revision added the A1 designation to the model number.

nice rifle!  i built one similar, but used an slick side upper and had the barrel chopped to 14. and an A2 per attached.  it is my fav rifle- and most everyone else who has shot.

Your new 16" LW barrel told my 16" LW barrel that it wants a Phantom too.

Nice, I like it. It's very similar to a build I want to put together. What barrel (Colt, BM, etc.) did you use?

Nice M4. Both configurations.

...That's right. If he wants to call it an M4, it's an M4.

Personally, I call all my black rifles "AR"s....even my Colt M4.
