According to previous info from some of the folks here, the Colt 6400C has all of the proper AR features INCLUDING a properly designed and retained (spring and plunger) front push pin.

Does anyone know who sells these? I know that RGuns sell the Match Target but those use a fake front pushpin that is cosmetically similar but does not use the spring and plunger retaining feature, it is a screw in....I am sure Hoplite is selling the same...but maybe not?

Any info from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Don't know for sure, but I get the idea that Colt's has not produced any of the MT series since 2004. The MT6400C is a nice lower, I have three, but they use oversized trigger/hammer pins. Got my lowers by purchasing complete rifles and parting them out.

Are those lowers blocked with the un-milled section in the back?

+1 on all of the above.

I haven't seen a NIB MT6400 in a while and I'm 99% sure SAW Sales does not have them either (in complete form or just the lower)

I don't know what you consider "all of the proper AR features" but the 6400 lowers (like all current Colt lowers) are milled just like everybody else's AR15 lowers except they use the larger trigger\hammer pins. If that works for you and you aren't worried about the role mark, any of the current Colt lowers are milled the same way.

They will not accept an RDIAS but the only AR15 lowers I know of that will are milled correctly for an RDIAS are machined by LAR. (BM "L" series, DPMS, Grizzly).

If it has to be a 6400 lower, your best bet is to do like Ekie and find a complete MT6400 and sell off the parts you do not want\need. I've seen a couple pop up lately.

AHA!!! That is the difference between the MT and the MT/M4...I see.

For some general info for you guys, I good friend of mine JUST ordered an MT reciever from RGUns and it did NOT have the proper push pin setup as I had noted. He got is about a week ago and I was VERY disappointed that it didn't come set up right.

I DID check SAW Sales website but it hasn't been udated since October of last year. I have NO idea what they have in stock. I do not mind the Large FCG pins and such, the only thing that has ALWAYS bugged me is Colt's ridiculous habit of not using proper front push pin setups.

Let me try the link you guys put up....

ETA: tried it...same old link....

Another tidbit, a buddy of mine HAS been getting the LE Marked lowers from SAW Sales as of late but I am trying to avoid the LE/Restricted markings...even though I love it, it's hilarious...but I already have one 6520 with that marking on it and I would like to avoid that in the future.

The Rguns lowers are new old stock, and are not drilled for the front pivot pin detent and spring. The entire MT line, alone with the LE stuff are now set up for the front pivot pin detent and spring.

I kinda figured that...now I just have to find someone who knows what I am talking about at one of these places and get what I need.

HEY, EKIE...another question. I have another SP that I am updating but on this one I have to do BOTH the upper and lower. The upper is an A1 upper with an A2 brass deflector. I assume this stuff is from the early A2 program before the rear sight mods....I want both the upper and lower small hole .250 front push pin....was it the .... WAS it the Colt 6320 reciever? SAW may still have these...I'll be doing the upper and lower on my SP2 and I want it to remain in the same cofiguration. I am hoping the 6320 is the A1 style upper with the A2 deflector....

GUYS, thanks to everyone for you participation...I am looking forward to getting my Ponies fully updated...and I will be helping folks in the BAN states with my old stuff!!!

Sorry, don't know what a 6320 is off the top of my head. Sounds like you got a SPII wich of course has a big offset pivot pin hole up front. It has what Colt's calls "field sights", and a deflector, A2 furniture, and A2 barrel. You don't like the big hole pivot pin, and I sure don't like them either. If you don't like em, don't use them.

Maybe you would be happier with a custom set up like this?

That is a USGI M16A1 upper receiver, bolt group, buttstock assy, all purchased from CDNN. Rounded it out with a grip off the EE, and a MT6601 lower & parts kit from Rguns. Had a hole drilled for the pivot pin spring & detent, and I painted the lower Norrell's to match.

The goal of the project was to be as close to a USGI M16A1 as possible, without paying $12,000. Don't know exactly what it is you want, so is hard to give you the advice you are looking for.

Well, Ekie, where do I start? First, you are seriously an Old School Genius. I love your stuff!!!

Okay...you are absolutely on the right track. What I am doing is taking my SP1 ( A1 ) and redoing the lower to the proper pushpin status. Just like your pic. It's current configuration is SP1 lower with an M16A1 upper. It's just as sugary sweet as can be. However, I am wanting to bring it to "proper" M16A1 configuration because I, too, despise the Large Front pushpin. That's why I am double checking the MT 6400 C, M4 lower.

Next, my SP2 upper is EXACTLY as SAW describes the upper and EXACTLY as you described it. So that muct be the 6320. Think of an old school 6520, essentially an A1 6520 with the brass deflector. Now, the Old 6520 Gov't Carbine AND the Old 6320 used a large front pin...but the NEW 6520 ( and appparently according to SAW Sales ) and the NEW 6320 upper are both small hole ( .250 ).

I am going to simply update my SP2 to 6320 status if I am lucky enough to be able to get a Colt 6320 upper.

NOW, Ekie, you have given me an idea.......I may take my SP1A1 a STEP FURTHER.....

How about the 6320 upper, the MT/M4 lower and the rest of my AR15/M16A1 parts ( sans the small FCG of course ) and creating an M16A1/2 transitiona/research and developement gun...with traingles instead of round hand Guards.....

I think that would be uber pretty!!!!

Sounds like we got that one covered. Basically the same as mine, but you will use a MT lower that is already drilled. Like mentioned before, you will then need a big hole FCG, and your upper and lower will be different colors.

OK, take your SPII, replace the lower and FCG with a MT6400C, the guards with triangles, and replace the upper with this:

Part #: SP64948
Description: UPPER RECEIVER (.250) - (AR6320, R0723, R0733) CARBINE, COMMANDO FIELD SIGHT (A1) / DEFLECTOR REC ONLY
Price: 195.00

That will all fit together, and upper and lower should be a close match in color. The only hick up I can think of would be if part number SP64948 has M4 feed ramps. That I don't know. That is a Carbine receiver, and may well be ramped. This may be a better bet:

Part #: SP64603
Description: UPPER RECEIVER (.250) - RIFLE R0715, R0719 FIELD SIGHT (A1) / DEFLECTOR REC ONLY
Price: 195.00

Ekie, thanks for the tips.

Here's what I am gonna do ( assuming I can get the stuff ) :

SP1: I have decided to replace both the Upper and Lower so that they will match. I will use the MT ( or LE, if necessary ) lower with the large AR15 FCG and top it off with a 6320 upper as we have described. I will retain all of the other other AR15/M16A1 parts.

SP2: pretty much the same thing...still wondering if I want to get a newer Colt reciever extension tube and go to the M4 stock.

Ekie...what can I expect to get for the old style SP1 and 2 receiver and small pin FCGs in excellent condition?

That will work fine, just make sure the uppers you get do not have the M4 feed ramps.

I don't like the old 2 position stock, is not comfortable for me in the closed, or extended position. The newer 4 position tube is nicer, and are black, so it will match your receivers. Would not be "correct" for the era of Carbine yours will look like though.

I paid $350 for a SP1 lower half, but that is the cheapest I ever seen one. Typically they are $450-$550 complete. So maybe $350 for a stripped one. If you left the receiver extention tube on the lower with the 2 position stock it would be easier to sell, a guy might really want one of those with the staked on castle nut.

Would list the trigger groups for say $45, or $35 if the disconnector is "bobbed".

I would not ask for more then $85 for a SP1 upper. Have seen them listed for more though.

Would start at $150 for the SPII upper. If it lacked the deflector it would be worth more.

If I understand correctly, the 6320 upper is the same as the 6520 upper except the 63 uses A1 sights? Are the barrels the same (i.e same profile, twist rate, feedramps?)

Thanks

The 6520 and 6320 are similar but the 6320 is an A1 profile with a brass deflector. Twist rates on my 6520 and my old school 6320 are both 1/7. The 6520 has M4 feed ramp cuts but the old school 6320 does not, of course.

Now, I have to make sure the New School 6320 receivers don't have the ramp cuts.

So barrel wise, between your (new school?) 6520 and your old school 6320, the only difference is the M4 feed ramps? I had gotten the impression that the 6320's were 1/9 twist but maybe this is something that varied through the years?

6320 is 1/9 twist. Yes, it has the C7 type A1 w/forward assist upper.

desertmoon's rifle is a 6420. Should be rollmarked AR-15A2 Sporter II.

I've seen 6420s with M16A1 uppers, C7 uppers, and A2 uppers. Late production 6420s are identical to green label 6520s. All as far as I know were 1/7 twist.

WOW, GUYS!!!! Can Colt keep a model straight for five minutes? I was suprised enough that there were large front hole and small front hole 6520s....and I only discovered that when I noticed a buddy of mine had a slabside Pony in the Box and it was a green label 6520.

Whew.......

WELL.....

IT HAS BEGUN!!!! The taxes are mailed off and I am getting 2500 back total......soooooooo, I sent a letter to SAW on everything I need. PLUS, by complete coincidence, SAW just updated their website!!!! Woo HOO!!!!!

Soon my 6420 Slabbie should be a fully current 6320.....or a fully current 6420 with a C7 upper......or whatever the model of the minute is.

To follow will be my old SP1/M16A1 hybrid. It will be sporting a nice new lower with a small front hole, proper detents and mag fencing.

Complete.....pure......Pony Sweetness.

Next up...UN-Springfielding my M1A's.........LRB here I come.

anyone got another spare $2500 bucks?
