I'm wanting to build an SP1 clone capable of shooting the heavier 5.56 loads.

Does anyone make a 20" 1/7 twist chrome lined A1 profile barrel? I haven't been able to find one. Only other thing I could figure is to order one of the Sabre 1/7 barrels from Talon Arms and have it turned down at ADCO. Of course then I'd have to find an A1 upper with M4 cutouts... If I do have an A2 profile turned, is the area between the gas block and the muzzle the only area that needs to be reduced to make it an A1 profile?

ETA: 20"

Are the Colts' still in production?

I'm kinda ascared to ask, but how would I go about getting one?

Mine's not for sale

I'm working on an M16A4 clone right now. I've got an Colt HBAR barrel for it, but is that the correct barrel?

Does anyone manufacture a 20" 1/7 barrel that is pencil-thin under the handguards, and standard diameter in front of the FSP? I'd like to shave some weight off of the weapon without compromising the appearance, if possible.

HBAR isn't correct for an M16A4, what you want is a "goverment profile" (AKA A2 profile) 20" 1/7 chrome lined barrel that is light under the handgaurds. CMMG, Colt (available from Specialized Armament), and Bushmaster all make barrels like that.

53Vortec:

Thanks for the info!

One more question: during extended rapid fire, does the HBAR have an advantage over the government profile barrel, in terms of heat dissipation? I'm thinking about buying a Beta C-mag and using the weapon for some fun at the range in a poor-man's LMG role. Would this be a bad idea with the pencil barrel, or would it not matter with only 100 rounds total being fired?

I have a SP1 upper that is a Chromed and 1/7 20" barrel. I got it off of the EE for $250.

Check the EE..there was a Colt SP1 upper on there last week for sale..

Everyone wants pencil barrels...

not a bad idea though. Pencil barrels are more practical than most barrel offerings nowadays.

What's the SAW part number? I couldn't find a 20" 1/7 LWT barrel in their selection. $395 is pretty steep for a barrel, but if your project requires it, you gotta pay.

BTW, I'd pay that for a new barrel, so I could chop it for my next Dissy upper project.

You could call Bushy. I know they make custom barrel twists on order...

Just finished reading that thread- I think they have meds for obsessive compulsive disorder nowadays.

Well, after looking into the various options the best bet seems to be going with CMMG's A4 barrel and having them turn it down, or finding a Colt used.

The concept behind this project was to have a rifle that handles like an A1, but would shoot the heavier bullets. After breaking it down, however, I think this project would cost more than it would be worth- I need to put more money into the .308s

Out of curiosity, however (which is 1/2 why I was thinking of doing this), does anyone have any idea how well a floated light barrel will shoot?

Yeah, but they don't have them. I've recently called and asked.
