you're mixing terminology
generally an M4 is a carbine whereas an AR15 is usually a rifle |

The M4 is a carbine with a telescoping stock, barrel step-down for an M203, M4 feedramps cut in the barrel extension and upper receiver for increased reliability, and it usually has a flat top upper.
