Has anyone purchased this from Brownell's?

Colt  bolt assembly

Is this a complete M16 bolt carrier group? It should be for the price, but they call it a "bolt assembly", so it may or may not be.

Since Brownells does not sell select fire parts, it would be an AR bolt.  I am going to assume that since they are going to use Colt terms, that it is only the carrier.  If it stated Bolt Carrier Group, they it would be the bolt and carrier.  However at that price and it states that it is for a 16" barreled carbine, it may well be the whole group assembly.  Call them and find out for sure......

I sent them an email, so we'll see what they say. I was just wondering if someone had already purchased it or at least asked them about it.

Brownells Schematics

It is only a complete bolt. You will find a lot of useful information in the "Schematics" section at Brownells.
You may also have a look at

I hate to hijack this thread, but is Brownells and SAW the only places I can get a Colt BCG?  Is $200ish the going rate these days?

Not that it really makes it any better, but $197.46 is for the complete bolt & carrier assembly.

It's $157.97 if you have a dealer account with them.

According to the schematic and the description below it, Assy/Ref #1 is the bolt only.  The bolt carrier with key goes for $221.06.

Just reading the drawing and the reference numbers below it.

Buy one of those "bolts" and let us know what you get.

I guess you could be correct, but I noticed the broken lines from item #1 (160-304-013
Bolt Assembly, 16" Barrel) that go around the bolt itself and the carrier. #1 is shown as more than one piece of the complete assembly.

I could be wrong though that’s just how I interpreted it.

I see that, but why two separate listings for the "bolt" and the "carrier with key"????

I'm confused.

Unless $197 gets you a bolt/carrier assy without a key and $220 gets you the key.

I see your point now.

It lists item #1 as "160-304-013 Bolt Assembly, 16" Barrel" and item #2 as "160-304-041
Bolt Carrier w/Key".

Confusing to say the least. It would also make for $400 complete bolt & carrier. Even the most handcore Colt fan would cry over that price.

Sure, but you need to remember-----Colt needs the money to pay their bogus law suits.

Nah, the handcore Colt fans would just pay it because they don't recognize that there are cheaper alternatives!

NOT!!!!!!!! Especially when I can buy a new surplus bolt and carrier for $125 bucks that is made by Colt. I think he did go up to $150 the last time I saw him but they are new/never used.

That's why I asked. If it were a complete BCG I would buy it for $160. I wouldn't pay $200 for it, and most certainly not $400+. Still awaiting Brownells’ response.

"1" just applies to the bolt, with a different breakdown for 9mm and 5.56mm bolts.  "3" applies to the 5.56mm carrier.  For the 9mm, the carrier and bolt are one unit.

So you'd need to buy "1" and "3" together, plus I believe it's the half-circle carrier.

Brownells is a good source for some items, especially if you have your C&R.  It is not a good source for Colt bolt groups.

I see... I guess the next logical question is - what is a good source for Colt M16 BCGs and what is a reasonable price for one?

Well, just got a response back:

Dear Sir,

We certainly do appreciate your interest in Brownells.

It is a bolt only for the AR-15.

It’s one pricey bolt I must say...

At those prices you would be better off getting a new colt rifle and use it for spares.

I've picked up a couple of Colt BCG's from Specialized armament for $179.  The carriers are the half-circle type (they describe as; BOLT GROUP, SEMI, SPORTER (1991-1997, 2002-PRESENT)), but the bolts came with the latest extractor setup, black insert and green spring, and I've been very happy with them.
