Greetings...

I am looking for a smith to do a barrel swap on an AR. The 2 Smiths I have found here are asking $60+. I think that is high to swap a 20" Colt Hbar to a light 16". I am debating buying the tools to do it myself, although it would most likely be the only time I ever use them.

So, if there is someone in my area that can do it for around $30 or so..send me a PM.

Thanks.

Oh yea, I have the complete kit for the 16", just need the labor done.

first off, welcome to the boards.

second, who have talked to about it? There's a guy on about 7600 south and redwood (patriot arms) that might be able to give you a better deal.

too bad I don't have the tools or know how to do that either.

edited to add- you might want to ask this in the hometown forums.

Our numbers here in the valley seem to be growing, we really should get together for a shoot.

Who have you tried?

Check with Totally Awesome Guns on 4075 West 4715 South (South of Home Depot and Smith's).  You can also check with Doug's Shoot 'n Sports on 4926 Redwood.

Totally awesome says they cant do AR barrel swaps...go figure!
Patriot arms guy never answers his phone.
Barrlows is the one that quoted $55-100!!
Dougs, isent that barrlows now?
Lock-stock and barrel said $75.
Gallionsons(sp?) said they dont do ARs.
Impact Guns in Ogden will do it for $30 but I dont want to take a 50mile trip, twice.

Hence, I am considering just buying the wrench and doing it myself...would need to find a good writen guide though.

Dont know squat about head spacing, etc.

Anyway, thanks.

The best resource for servicing your AR-15 is the Army M-16 manual.  I see them for sale every now and then on the Equipment Exchange.

There's a Class III dealer in Bountiful that sells a lot of AR type stuff.  He also builds custom AR's.  I'll look around and see if I can find a name and phone number.

I'm also new to posting; been a long time lurker. I'm up at Hill AFB/Ogden area. I could loan you the tools and manual if you are interested. All you need is a good bench vise. I did the same type swap. Took a 20" barrel off my Bushy flat top and put it on a LAR A2 upper (bought from them down in West Jordan; nice folks). Put a Rock River M4 style 16" on the flat top. Not hard to do at all. I'd even help if I can find the time. Maybe we need to get some of the locals together for a building party.

Wow, this is the most Utahn's I have seen on one topic on this board.

Barlow is a reputable smith, but I personally think he is an ass.

I have never done business with them, but give West Valley Gunsmith a call-968-5282.

Hey...I'm late to the party but, better late than never!

Impact is great for this but, I understand it's a bit of a drive.

Where is the 3-gun match?

I'm not near SLC or I'd help you out, but it really is a 20 minute job if you have:

(1) the barrel wrench;
(2) a torque wrench;
(3) anti-sieze; and
(4) a vice.

Plus, it is a good skill to have.

I was going to go to the 3-gun, right up until I got the flu this week.  Bleah.

Try vector arms in North salt lake, they might.  They are in the phone book.
