Anybody have suppressed 300 Whisper AR15's? I am considering having an upper done in this caliber after shooting two rifles in 300 Whisper...

Accurate and VERY VERY quiet...however I need pics to get more ideas and to pass ideas I like on to my gunsmith.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Ed

Ed, I will try to find my pics of mine. I have one and am having another built by KKF at the moment. I also just ordered a cheapo one from Model 1 sales to help in load development. There is a pic on the fiesty rooster(sp?) of his barrel spliting during subsonic load deveopment. I will see if I can find the link. Go to www.quarterbore.com, he has some great stuff. I use a SWR can on mine and it is hollywood quiet and very accurate. I love this round.

Will rely on Corbon subsonic, and supersonic loads. I won't shoot it enough to see a difference in loading my own and buying Corbon. I'd like to have something that looks like this: That is an AR10 in 338 Whisper, but it has the look I am after. Only I'd like the overall length to be less, like 17" total barrel length with the can. Looking more for an MP5SD look. Ed

most of the loads including corbon are set of for 16" barrels.

I was about to post "please consider keeping a barrel length of 16 inches" but you beat me to it ! usma, very FINE looking rifle you have there !

OK, so what do you guys suggest so I don't have a huge barrel out front? I'd like something more portable than a rifle length configuration.
Link Posted: 11/2/2003 11:39:41 AM EDT
If you do not want your can sticking out front(that sounds funny, he he he) I would suggest going with a SSK can. it slides over the barrel and locks to the middle of the barrel http://www.quarterbore.com/300whisper/rifles/rig004.html I have shot one of these and they are good cans, heavy and durable. They do not come close to the sound reduction of the SWR or Gemtech cans IMHO. This is not a scientific test, just my ears, but the SSK can was very quiet when shooting subsonic 220 Whisper loads.

I'm thinking maybe a side cocking upper with no gas system for use on a postban AR lower.... That way the can can have threads as far back as necessary on the barrel while still minimizing the forward protrusion.

How not to test subsonic loads.... http://feistyrooster.com/300x221/300x221barrelsplit.html lots of good info on Quarterbore's site....thanks

USMA89, How does the AWC Thundertrap compare to the SWR can?

What is the overall length of the barrel including the suppressor??

Now there's an idea. Wonder what a 16" barrel, PRI rifle forend, and my Gemtech TPR-S would be like? sorta like a big MP5SD?

You want to see something cool, check out this weapon and the video... http://quarterbore.com/300whisper/rifles/rig006.html It's ONE HELL OF A CAN but boy does it look like a whole lot of fun! The link to the video is on the bottom of the page... M-16 + 300 Whisper + BIG Can = Too much fun!

Oh yea, if I ever stop spending money faster then I can make it I am still planning to do something like this... http://www.quarterbore.com/300whisper/300upper.html The biggest concerns I would have include the 1:8 barrel for subsonic loads, an adjustable gas tube for both sub and supersonic loads, and a short enough barrel so you can add a silencer. Now, personally, I hope to get another M-16 (AR-15RR) before the prices climb even further above what I can afford and then perhaps I will actually have one built myself. For now, I did build a 300 Whisper AR-15 pistol as shown here: http://quarterbore.com/images/pbar15pistol05.jpg Kurt at Kurts Kustom did the 10.5-inch barrel. KAC Medium Long FF RAS. Gem-Tech TPR-S Bi-Lock Bushmaster lower bought on Pistol paperwork RRA Flattop Post Ban legal as there is no gas system (Bolt Action)

So here is my latest addition: This is the before picture. I am now embarking on my quest. Starting with a 21" SSK Industries 300Whisper upper. My plan: Convert it to a ASA or SOCOM Mfg. sidecharging upper, or at the very least have Lee Hadaway convert it to a sidecharger. Cut the barrel to around 14" but add a permanently pinned OPS brake, as supersonic loads will require ear protection anyway. Thus the overall barrel length will remain 16", thus avoid the SBR tax. Add a thread set to the barrel just in front of the gas block that will accomodate very long suppressor, hand built for this gun. The look I am after is that of the MP5SD, though it may be a little longer than that. I will update as I move further along. Ed

I have not tried the AWC, but the SWR is considered the class of all 308 suppressors. EBR is using it in its gun. Check this out: http://www.swrmfg.com/video/omega1.asp Ed, I think we have the same issues, we trick everything out until it is perfect, then move to another project. Good get on the SSK upper. I wonder how you talked 300Whisper out of it. The barrel with can is right at 24", but balances o.k., not great but o.k. I traded this upper away, but have a model 1 I am using for load testing and KKF producing another custom upper for me at this time. The model 1 is now with John at K2 sports to open up the gas port and thread it for my can. I would love to share your story on my website as you work through this project. If you would like to share, all I need is a few pictures and the story about what the upper is and we can make updates as you work through getting here where you want it. Also, is this the SSK upper that was posted on the board? I never got a reply to my E-mails asking if the one here was an SSK or made by someone else so I assumed it was a clone. If this is the same upper, and it was made by SSK you got a great deal!

I'm using Teppojutsu and his circle of "friends" as needed. I am liasing with Marty ter Weeme exclusively and he does the work he wants to and asks Pauza, Tromix, etc to help on the stuff they excel at... Has worked well for me so far....I love the 458 SOCOM upper he did for me.

QB: We are going to start the project, in earnest, at the 1st of the New Year. I will keep track of how it goes and take pics along the way. I may ask Marty to do the same up there as work continues. Ed
