If you were going to buy a rifle other than an AR what would your first choice be? I'm talking about a semi-auto that takes magazines and is more powerful. But not a monster like a 50 or a 458 socom or another expensive to shoot super high power rifle. Thanks

The next rifle that I buy will probably be an FAL.

A .308 battle rifle of some kind. Probably an M1A or HK91. M1A's are available off the shelf, but it would be fun to build an HK91/G3 rig.

I'd like to have a FAL or an HK91.

Edit: An FNC wouldn't break my heart either [:)]

I would say an AR10 but I got one and you are excluding ARs.  The FAL is a good battle rifle but I don't battle, It would have to be 308, I have had the M1A1 type and the AR10 is more to my liking, I guess a Belt Fed 1919 Semi would be the choice of the day for me.

6.5 Grendel. Oops, that is an AR type rifle but if I couldn't have that then maybe a HK-91/93.

AR10,70% parts commonality with my ARs and takes good strong M14 mags,Second a FAL because its used the world over still and plenty of spare parts,M14/M1A last but only if I could get one assembled with GI parts and a forged receiver.Down fall is parts are real expensive and mags wich makes an AR10 still a little pricey,Maybe a FAL from DSA is a more logical choice for me.

It's not semi-auto and it's not mag. fed but I'd say that everyone needs a good flintlock rifle.  I've got an Austin & Halleck flint Mt. rifle and as long as I've got a sharp flint, powder and ball I'm good to go.   There's a reason why flintlocks lasted for over 200 years.  Plus, they a butt load of fun to shoot, just think about it, you're shooting a gun using a rock.  Very cool.

This one is EASY !!

I'm buying the new AR15.com SER AK-74 (probably).  This Group Buy is now being put together so see the AK Forum for details.

(If you don't have an AR-10, please see the SEBR/SER Forum as it's still not too late to get in on that Croup Buy.  ArmaLite gave us some unbelievably good pricing.)

Knight SR-25 with "battle weight" barrel. Weighs less than an M-14 and shoots less than 0.50 MOA all day long.

Almost all AR stuff bolts on.

If the scope fails, pop it off, flip up the BUIS and fight your way out of the problem.

In short, a semi-auto sniper rifle you can use as a battle rifle.

Wow, not much concensus. I thought that will everybody on the board being into AR-15's that the next rifle to get would be down to a couple of guns. Allot of great ideas though, iv'e been checking these guns out all over the net and iv'e got allot of good ideas. If you've got more ideas keep them coming. Thanks

I'd get a HK PSG-1 if I had the stomach to spend 10 grand.  Otherwise I would get an HK 91, an M1A, and a Sako .308.

Definately an AK.  Either 7.62 or 5.45, I'll take either one.

Next would be a FAL.

Well, I have the bolt guns covered, have the M1; I think my next long gun purchase will be either a Marlin 336 in 30/30 or a Swedish Rolling block in 12.7 (.50").

No one interested in a SVD (Dragunov)?   And not the Romak-3, which is just a modified RPK and not a true Dragunov sniper rifle..

As for me, after my AR I got a Finnish Mosin Nagnt (Sako M39)...It was really dirty, it's heavy, and it's older then dirt, but I like it a lot and it was $189.   Once I get a scope on it(just about $300, scope included) I'll be able to shoot sub MOA.    It's not quite a PSG1, but it's something I can afford, and they just dont make rifles like that anymore..

Ok, so far FAL's in the lead with 10, M1 or M1A is second with 9 and the AK types are 3rd with 7. From what I know about them they should all be fun to shoot. It seems like it would be really hard to deciede on a way to go with the FAL though. I went to the FAL forum and it seems like most you put together with a kit. Anymore ideas would be great. Thanks

I'll second this.  I am interested in the FAL as my next battle-rifle; but waiting until '04 to get one.  What is the current hot set-up for an FAL?
Cost effective, but good are the criteria; no designer specials, but no crap guns, either.

No CETME...?

Damn! When did this happen? Who in Jersey sells them?
There was a place in Cherry hill that carried the "Politically Correct" single stack AKs...
As for FALs, I have never seen one in this state.

Well, I know where my next bonus check is going. [:D]

Thanks for the info!

If you’re waiting for the ban to go away you might consider an FAL with a suppressor.
