Looks like a regular carbine....

Saw it in a book I just finished reading, None Braver by Michael Hirsh.

Its what the Air Force calls their carbine variants.

All Airforce weapons have a GAU designation. IE a 30cal Minigun is a GAU-17

GAU and GUU are just USAF designations for weapons. GAU is for aircraft-mounted weapons and GUU is for miscellaneous (e.g. personal) weapons, though this doesn't mean the USAF pays attention to this. The 7.62mm M134 minigun is the GAU-2A/B and GAU-17. The original GAU-5/A was a XM177 without forward assist, the Model 610 I believe. Then came the GAU-5/A/A which is the XM177E2. Then there's the GAU-5P and GUU-5P and a bunch of other stuff I don't understand. :) But yes, a Colt carbine, usually without forward assist.

I leanrt how 2 be confguused. I is smart. But seriously talk about all the designations. After awhile in the military your converrsation would go like this "SUP? NADA? HIYD? OK hav to be on the TARMAC ASAP or my AIIAC TTYS.. something like this now figure that out :)

GAU/ GUU are similar to the AR15A3 tactical carbine, but are auto. IIRC, the GAU had the thin barrel, while the GUU variants had a heavier. I could be wrong on that. I have a USAF K9 handler friend who just got issued a new one (GUU), but then he got sent to Iraq, so he isn't answering many questions right now.

GAU = Gun Aircraft Unit GUU - Miscellaneous Gun Unit where they get Miscellaneous from "U" is anybodies guess....

My wife refers to to the weapon she carries in Iraq as a GUU. For her it is a Colt M4, full auto.
