I am not talking about a military/wartime situation, just field or class type situations.  In carbine classes, I typically only use 3 30 round mags.  I am using a CQB Solutions Operator chest rig with an SDS two 30 round mag pouch on my weak side for a total of 5 mags.

I carry four mags when using a semi AR-15.  Just a personal thing but I never use 30-round mags in a semi AR-15.  In my AR-18, I do use the old Sterling 30-round mags as well as the old ArmaLite 20-rounders.

Interesting, why not 30's?

Not quite as reliable and difficult to shoot with in prone position.

3 30's in my CQB chest rig and one in a Comp-Tac weakside kydex mag pouch.

BTW Slayer: the CQB chest rig will hold 2 mags per pouch.I just found this out about a month ago.

Redbone, you just made my day two mags do fit.  Why the hell didn't I try it before.  My wife asked me what I was so excited about, she thinks I nuts but that's ok.  It sure as heck did not look like it would hold two per pouch.

5subslr5, I have not erperienced any differences between 20 and 30's but I will pay more attention to it since you brought it up.

My vest holds 6-30s and I have a belt pouch that holds 2-20s+1-30 in the gun for a total of 250 rounds. I never need this much ammo when competing or training, but I use it because that is what I would be carrying in a SHTF situation.

I am with on that one triburst.  I am trying to configure my gear so that what I train with is what I would use should a situation arise.

4 mags in an SOE Force Subload for classes, or 4 total in a pair of Eagle low profile dual mag pouches. I use standard USGI 30's...

I had traditionally carried 4-5. Two in a Eagle double leg pouch, one in a Black Hawk belt pouch, one in the gun, and sometimes one loose in my back pocket but not usually.

I recently got a CQB Solutions chest rig that holds three that I really like. I have been using it and the regular load lately to bring the to 7, and its not bad, but Im not sure Im going to keep the leg pouch any more. I'll have to wait and see. I will loose either the leg pouch or the chest pouch depending on which I feel more comfortable with over time.

I take only 1 20 to the range with me.
I sometimes take a 30,

I've got 2 5 rounders and a 30 rounder...but I will probably get a few more to fill up by assault vest once by wallet thickens :)

I didn't think they'd hold 2 either until someone on another board brought it up.I don't think CQB Solutions intended it to hold 6 mags but that's the way they turned out.I prefer 3 mags in it because it's lower profile but I like to know 6 will fit if i need to carry 6 on the chest.

I carry 3 30 round mags loaded, with an extra box or 2 of duty ammo in my case at all times.

3-30s on belt in pouch.
4-20s on belt "  "
2-140 rd bando's in butt pack
This is just for the range.
I carry much more in my SHTF backpack.

I usually load up about 50- 30rnd mags before I go to the range--I HATE reloading there. (yes 1500 rounds per trip with no cleaning my "unreliable" AR till I get home)

With my rifle in the trunk I have it in a padded case with 5 30 round GI mags.  If I'm going to carry it, I have a modified GI pouch with 3 (plus one in the rifle).

When I'm patrolling the neighborhood I usually pack along 15 30 rounders along with my SIG (with 8 extra mags).  You never know when shit's gonna happen in DUVALL.
