I need a good scope to go on top of the carry handle of my ar15. the gun is set up for defensive purposes as well as target shooting.

I would say Red Dot. I have both red dot on a RRA tactical handle and a 3-9x40 on a removable A2 carry handle. I like the red dot up to 75 yards because I can use both eyes. My little $0.02

I was told to mount the red dot as far forward and as close to the bore as possible. I use this setup and I'm very pleased. I have it zeroed at 50 yards.

If it HAS to be on the carry handle I say get a Compact ACOG. Red Triangle.

Blueshocky, can you see through the site ok with it set like that. It looks like the carry handle would obscure it a bit?

Oh yeah, this set-up was made with a co-witness in mind. You can see every bit of the iron sights as well as the entire Aimpoint scope. That's the beauty of Aimpoint. As long as you put the dot on the target you can look from any angle of the gun. check it out! http://www.aimpoint.com/video/video.htm
