Just wondering for those of you who have painted your AR and who have painted barrels, what happens when you run thru 3 mags real fast?  I have one painted plastic only but want to paint it all.  I used krylon camo colors, please anyone who has thoughts on this give your advise.  Ive got an itchy rattle can finger and want to paint up another AR.

The paint on my freinds AR (Krylon camo paint and bowflauge) does not peel or come off at all.  His rifle has been painted for years now with some touch up now and again.  My Mossberg 500 has been camo'ed with Krylon camo paint for about a year now with no problems form heat.  I tried taping (camo tape) an FAL and my bolt gun and had to take it off because the heat made the adhesive seep through the tape and it was messy as hell at least around the barrel.  BTW, your rifles look great.  Painting guns is for some reason addictive.

Do that to your AR and enjoy it! No worries about it cooking off from the heat. I did mine and it holds up well to heat and CLP just gives it alittle sheen.

Thanks for the compliments.  I just got done painting my second AR.  I couldnt bring myself to paint the upper and lower receivers.  It took around 4 hours with layering drying time.  I used a couple different branch types for the 20 inch AR.  So what do you guys think should i paint the whole thing or does it look good like it is?  Nevermind i dont have the courage right now to.

Now that i took a picture of all of them i decided my 16 was to light so i ripped it all apart and its drying right now but here are a few pictures sorry if they are large i wanted to show the detail for a rattle can job.

You did a fine job! Degrease that metal and have fun! Use aluminum foil aroung the sights and hang that puppy by the rear aperture and a dowel in the hider. If you want little details, do the inside of the ejection port cover and by the selector. Roll up some paper to put inside the upper when doing the cover and do one spot of the reciever by the selector, then rotate it when dry to do the other portion with the remaining parts. Pop a mag in there and do that at the same time. Here's a pic of a friends AR, I used vegetation from the neighborhood.

2. "YES" you should FINISH the job when you work up the nerve. Weapons with green furniture have always looked tacky IMO & painted furniture looks even worse. Not because I dislike either style. On the contary, I think painted & green furniture is great. What I don't like is the juxtaposition of the colored furniture against the stark blackness of the receiver. It looks awful to me. Put a painted furniture AR next to a fully painted AR & tell me which looks correct.

Nice looking stuff!  I painted my son's airsoft gun with Krylon camo and it looks pretty decent.  Took about 15 mins.  I topped it with a clear coat to give the color a little protection.

From the time spent you can imagine that there is no detail do it.... no leaves or twigs.

i have had the cammo, tan krylon, darken just a tad from excessive barrel heat, but it still looks great

I have been doing this for many of my friends for quite some time just as a hobby but I am starting to do this as a side job.  Ill post pics and I made bookhound an offer to do his free for a write up.  I sell brand new magazines custom painted with a mag pull for $30 plus shipping and will do the stock forward grip and handle for $80.  You provide the parts.  In that $80 you receive a new magazine as well.  Dont laugh but I have gotten lead poison some how and have lost my job because I can not hold a first class medical (Im a Pilot) So Im starting to do this on the side to help pay the bills.  Check out the Ga. Forums for updated pics and Ill host some more as soon as I get them up.  If you live in the GA. area I can do the whole gun for you if you like.  I airbrush 4 layers of paint and 2 coats of clear then bake them dry.  I do ammo boxes and all other things you can think of painting.  I have not tried to do any desert scemes yet but if there is a call Ill start to practice on that also.  You can contact me via email if you like at [email protected]

How does the paint hold up on your suppressor there? I know they get kinda toasty.

Will CLP or Gunscrubber strip the paint off the rifle?  I have a nice airbrush setup and wanted to try to camo up one of my rifles(my M1A black synthetic stock would be my first experiment, hell SA painted it first).  Also, what's the best paint to use through an airbrush?  I build and paint lots of 1/35 scale armor kits, would say the Floquil railroad line work.  That's the paint that needs to be thinned with Diosol, nasty stuff.
