You can. If you start with a carbine A4 barrel, it already has the chopped sight block. Buy long handguards and a RRA clamp type gas block to put out front and voila!

The reason that probably wouldn't work is because the barrel would need to be profiled so that the front sight would fit properly on the front of the barrel. A stock barrel is turned down too thin for a standard sight to fit.

If we are talking about Armalite AR10 carbine barrels, I'm fairly sure this would work. The front of the barrel is 0.725" dia as opposed to the 0.750" dia where the gas block is mounted. This is also why I recommended the RRA clamp on block, which hopefully can take up the slack. Perhaps a shim would be needed, but we don't have to worry about a gas seal.
The new LW 308 barrels are another issues altogether. |

I made a dissy out of my 223 M4 barrel, chopped the front sight and added a weaver block w/detachable sight and 20" handguards. Should be able to do the same with a .308 barrel.
