Glock 19, I know that it will fire, no matter what environment I would find myself in (Swamp, Desert, and Forest). You are most likely find more of the 9mm Rounds on the Battle field, 45acp is a nice Weapon but finding the Rounds could be a little difficult.

But in the end no matter what you carry it comes down to reliability and Shot Placement.
Bigger is not always better, if you can hit where you are aiming.

I was teased once at a Range about my Glock by a S&W 1911 owner. I told him that I would never have an problem firing my Weapon if my Life depended on it, Then I stuck my Glock in a bucket of dirty rain water pulled it out and Fired it. I asked him if his S&W can do that, he said that he would not ever consider it and it was impractical. I said you never know when you need to rely on it to save your life and I know that I can Rely on my Glock. [kill]

i dunno i cant choose between a 1911 and a HK
Mark 23. By the way Force Recon uses specialized 1911's that are only made in Quantico.

I carry:

1911 in .45
Kimber Custom Target
or
Browning Hi-Power
9mm

I like the power of the .45 but it
is finicky with anything but RN bullets.
The Hi-power will swallow anything and
is easier to shoot.

HK USP Tactical for suppressor work,
Custom 1911 or Glock 35 for general use.

I have a Colt 1911, H&K USP 45, S&W 1006 10mm, S&W SW40F.

For me the SW40F is the choice. The fit and feel is perfect, the angle of the grip to the slide is oh so sweet. .40 has some of the best one shot stoppages of all the handgun rounds.

Caliber Pros & Cons

Caliber
Pros
Cons

22 long rifle rimfire
Small

Cheap
May kill an attacker - but not before he kills you !

25 ACP
Small ammo, & small guns
Expensive (2-3 times the cost of 9mm ammo)

May kill an attacker - but not before he kills you (less KE than a 22)

32 ACP
Size efficient

Reasonable ballistics (European loadings = 120+ ft.lbs KE from short barreled guns)
Puny performance if you use the US loadings  (60 - 80 ft.lb KE)

Not a good attack terminator

Relatively expensive

Not available everywhere

380 ACP
Starting to get to reasonable diameter

Widely available
Not size efficient (only 30-50% more KE than best 32 in most cases)

Marginal attack terminator

Relatively expensive

9mm Parabellum

(9mm Luger)
Ballistically efficient

Cheap

NATO caliber (common)
Needs relatively expensive hollow point ammunition to avoid over-penetration (& ricochet) and produce good attack stopping performance

357 SIG
Good attack stopping performance

Adopted by several State & Federal LE agencies (should become more popular - & cheaper)
Noisy

Not available everywhere

Expensive (but getting cheaper)

38 S&W Special
Widely available

Cheap
Marginal attack stopping performance - even in +P loadings.

Large case size for performance delivered.

357 S&W Magnum
Widely available

Reasonably priced practice ammo

Good attack stopping ability - but needs hollow pint bullets (more expensive)
Large case size for performance delivered.

Recoil may be too much for some people - especially in smaller revolvers.

Noisy

40 S&W
Good attack stopping ability - even cheap FMJ varients

Widely available

Reasonably priced
No real disadvantages, but recoil may be too much for some in smaller guns

45 ACP
Good attack stopping ability with cheaper FMJ bullets.

Widely available
Hollow point bullets have reputation for under-penetrating.

Relatively expensive

Large and heavy considering the relatively low KE delivered

For me I prefer a .45 in a 1911 platform.  I am quite fond of my Glocks but my first choice would be and is; my Wilson or Kimber Compacts.

Concealed, I carry Glock 36, Kahr K9, or sometimes a Seecamp 32 if I only have my G string on.

Open, A glock 22, S&W 627, S&W 625, S&W 610, etc.

Doesn't anyone here like revolvers?

The greatest combat pistol of all time, The 1911 in any incarnation. If I had to go with a 9mm I'd carry its little brother, the Highpower
