Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Tape on butt stocks.

I have noticed that many of the M-16's our troops in Iraq are using have tape wrapped around the butt stock.  (Looks like O.D. duct tape)  Has anybody else noticed this?  What is the purpose for the tape?

Some have tape that has a number marked on it to identify whose rifle it is.
Others are taped to hold the sling in a more tactical position and/or to keep the sling from swinging back and forth on the swivel and making too much noise.
