One night in Madrid we were walking past a store that had handguns and fishing reals in the window. So we popped in. One side had an AR-15 behind the counter w/ mag.

I think was a .222 caliber gun cause .223 guns are banned (I'm pretty sure). The store was closing and I didn't speak Spanish so I couldn't ask to guy if I could see it to inspect it (what brand, caliber, ect). However it did have A2 handle, bayo lug and fh.

I know Oly sold .222 Rem lowers/rifles in Europe because it is illegal to sell military caliber rifles in some countries.  (Just confirming your thoughts.)

Weren't they done in .222 Magnum?  The .222 Mag. is closer to the .223 Rem.

Colt also sold .222 Remington Lowers in Europe because so many countries over there ban weapons that are chambered for military calibers.

They are considered collectors items here in the states.

The only example I saw was an Oly SGW lower marked ".222 REM"; Oly told me it was made for the European market.

The very first .22 cal designed by ArmaLite called the "Stoppette" - if you can believe that name - later designated the AR-11 was in .222.

The AR-11 (designed by Robert Enewold and not Stoner) would likely have become the M-16 but the Army made a slight change in their SCHV specifications and that necessitated development of the .223/5.56mm round.  We have a member here "gus" whose father did much of the development work on the .223 cartridge.

Just got done looking at a gun store advertisement in a Spanish hunting magazine I bought.

They have Olympic .222 ARs for sale on request.
