I'm new to the AR-15 and I'm waiting on my first kit to arrive.Since I was only 12 when the AWB came into effect, I'm now wondering why exactly it came into being when it did. Just thinking here, but was it before or after that famous bank robbery shootout in CA? My memory is a little fuzzy on the year of that event, but I was wondering if it was a reaction to that event or not. Growing up with the AWB in effect for about as long as I can remember I can't really tell that it really did anything. I never hear anyone say that crime as dropped since the ban or anything, so I was curious what exactly it was that triggered a ban to be able to be passed into law.

A bunch of faggots got their panties all twisted in a wad. No one event or crime "set it off". That was the highwater mark for the anti's, IMO. Hopefully, the sunset will be their next to lowest mark. Their lowest should be their disbanding. The ban was LONG before the LA Bank Robbery. A couple of things the liberals never point out about the LA Bank Robbery. 1)The guns were illegally converted. They were imported as semi's. 2)The guns were imported AFTER the AW Ban was effect. Klinton signed a waiver for some Chinese dude for a payoff. Lo & behold, it was discovered by the BATF via tracing that those were among those Klinton let in for $$$$$$$. Kinda warms your heart, yes? [}:D]

The anti's wanted to drive up the prices and increase the selection of semi-auto rifles on the market, while increasing the numbers of people interested in such rifles. [:D]

The real reason for the AW ban was due to the Drug wars of the 80s and early 90s. In that time period urban minority gangs rules the roost in many cities. Their tactic of choice was to do a drive by shooting. That is, Drive up to the intended target area, hose with bullets using little or no skill and drive off. This periodically led to inocent deaths. The true goal was to reduce the armament of these urban minorities. Problem was that if you take away from them, then you gotta take away from everyone.Certain liberal congress people thought that they could put up a show of this with the AWB while not taking away a large number of voters by attacking peoples pistols and Shotguns. It never occurred to them that the primary weapon of choice of the criminals was actually the pistol and the shotgun. It sounded like a reasonable idea to them at the time, thought it wouldn't cost them any political capitol at the time and made it look like they did something. They were wrong.

It was just a matter of time before gang-bangers started committing robberies armed with bayonets and drive-by bayonetings would be hard to solve as they are silent. It kept these dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals. I think I heard that Diane Feinstein's bodyguard carries a bayonet.

Assault weapons are scary looking! [:O] Socialist hippie types are scared of assualt weapons! [8P] If you have an assualt weapon that has evil features like pistol grips and flash hiders you might scare socialist hippie types! [>Q] Now we wouldn't want that, would we? [}:D]

There are a lot of people who never grew up around guns, are afraid of them, and think that if we simply eliminated guns, violent crime would go away. The '94 'Assault Weapon Ban' was simply the first phase in this goal. First 'assault' weapons, then semi-auto's, then pistols, then shotguns, and finally, an outright ban. And by that time, there wouldn't be any real resistance left. That's why it's so important to keep every precious, little right we have, to keep the anti's from getting a foothold.

Not to mention, violent crime statistics did not bear the numbers out. Assault weapons consistantly held well under 10% of the violent crimes weapon of chooice statistic. The other side of the coin is that certain liberal (anti-gun) used this as a platform of disarmament by degrees. Ak-47s & Ruger Mini 14s have 30 round mags. Notice the wording of the ban, however. ALL WEAPONS with a detachable box (mag) of more than 10 rounds to be banned. Proof positive they have it in for all guns, not just some "evil element" in the firearms world. This was merely all they could get away with so they took what they could and ran with it.
