I wouldnt do it If I were you. You run the chance of over pressure rounds because of too short headspace and extraction problems. In reality you are likely to be able to make it work but I like the odds 999 to 1 not just better than 50/50 when it comes to fire arms.

If you get a .223 barrel then shoot .223 in it IMHO. Why would you want to trade out for a .223 anyway?

yeah i might get an almost brand new .223 barrel for $50 from my friend..so im thinking about building a new AR from parts in .223.
What kind of upper can i use ? and bolt ?..can i use 5.56 ones or do i really need a .223.. actually i dont know if that exists...i will shoot .223 ammo.

thanks

I'm new to all of this, so bear with me please.

I bought an Armalite M15A2 Carbine. It says 5.56 right on the left side of the reciever.

Is it okay for me to shoot .223 ammo? I just assumed that .223 and 5.56mm were different names for the same rounds...

Help a newbie out.

From what I understand, it's OK to shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber. But it is not a good idea to shoot 5.56 from a .223 chamber. The actual chamber is almost identical. It has to do with the angle of the leade (basically the barrel throat). It is different in the 2 barrels. A 5.56 in a .223 chamber can cause very high pressures.
Hopefully someone can confirm my understanding.

Thanks, that is about what my local ammo guy said, but I thought maybe he just wanted to sell shells.

I will shoot with confidence... I'm working on the skill part, but confidence I got...

Why are you guy's always comparing me to .223? I am much sexier and more worldly. That .223 pipsqueak can't hold a candle to a real man like me!

556mm

Well if the barrel is not chrome lined you can have it reamed to 5.56mm specs. Kurt from KKF in the industry section will do this. Also if you buy an upper and bolt from Bushmaster they will install it for free.

Wow. After reading the AR-15 Ammo FAQ, I realize I have received a serious education. My only regret is that there isn't much M193 available anymore. Damn Clinton... maybe our current president will rescind the order.

There is a lot of Lake City XM193 still available. Winchester still produces Q3131 and Q3131A is M193. IMI produces M193 (Winchester Q3131A is the smae stuff, different label) also.

Winchester has not produced Q3131 since 1999 or so.

Oops. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Hey thanks, I didn't realize. Judging by some of what I read I assumed it was in short supply now since Clinton the "no surplus" Executive Order.

I found a supplier, Chestnut Ridge, that has tons of the stuff:

Clinton's been gone for almost 2 years.... why isn't Bush changing this?

Most of us tend to forget that just because a politician is a Republican doesn't mean they are completely gun friendly. They are usually gun friendlier, but not completely friendly. McCain was greatly in favor of severe gun control. George W. is in favor of renewing the AW ban.

It's up to us to tell him that a second term hinges on the AW passing. It's up to us to make sure the AW ban never comes around again. And it's up to us to tell them we want the destruction of surplus goods to end. The latter is a more complicated issue because it was an international agreement. All of NATO is involved with destroying surplus weapons and ammunition. However, the end of the AW ban is within our reach and we must work hard to ensure its permanent passing.

Exactly. Despite what some skeptics say (and who can blame them the way gun rights have been kicked around), I fully believe we can get that rotten AWB off the books for good! We need to start moving on this issue NOW, while we can build a decent base of support. Make it clear that we are not going to take this the second time around, and that we are smarter to believe that having a magazine with > 10 rds does not automatically make you crime-prone, nor does possession of a semi-automatic rifle.

To the skeptics: join us in our enthusiasm for eliminating this ridiculous piece of legislation. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
