Can anyone post some information on how to assemble/build an AK? I'm interested in buying a barreled receiver and one of the build kits. But I have no idea on how to assemble/build one.

That barreled receiver looks nifty! I have been wanting to pick up a new AK with stuff like the Zhukov stock and ALG trigger coming out but I was reluctant to do so because I didn't want to add to the pile of excess AK parts I already have. This looks like a nice solution, I think I will pick one up once some reviews come in.

Yeah, the only difficulty I ever had working on an AK was installing a trigger pin retaining plate. And that was only because I did not have any experience in doing so. They have already done all the stuff on these that requires a hydraulic press or anything the typical hobbyist doesn't have. |

View Quote I agree. It looks like PSA has handled all the parts of building an AK from a parts kit that take any real skill (pressing barrel and barrel pin in and out, setting trunnion to receiver location, drilling receiver, tapping trunnions or riveting, headspacing, etc). From what I can tell, it's just assemble and shoot. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to assemble the FCG with trigger pin retaining plate. That should be the hardest part, and it's really not difficult at all. I'm going to add a PSA AK build to my list. Think I may wait for a receiver with side mount. PSA, way to go. This is an awesome way to approach the AK build process. |

By the position of the front sight drum on the rifle above it looks like they went traditional. Canted front sight.

So anyone know when these will actually be available?

So, we're these actually in stock for a fraction of a second? Or was it an accident on showing you all had a few in stock?

You could complete the rifle with these items but the gub-r-mint would consider it evil. There is a disclaimer on the bottom of the item on PSA's website that states: "The following items in this kit are not 922r compliant. Bolt Carrier, Gas Piston, Trigger, Hammer, Disconnector and Muzzle brake". Of course the receiver, barrel, and presumably the magazine you are going to use are US made, however, why do they send the imported stuff with it? FCG would be three, new piston one, and US made muzzle brake one. If you are like me and want to use ComBloc magazines, that should do you. (maybe one less because of the US made furniture.) There is a funny signature originally posted by BullPupKing on the AKfiles: Saving American lives, one foreign part at a time. The director must be like, "You know what keeps me up at night? Eleven or more foreign parts on a rifle." |

New users would not let me go over 2000 characters on the original post, but I wanted to add:
I would get the siderail. The ability to get an optic that can hold zero is very important. Also, yes, the savings are very worth it. Basically save the federal excise tax on the firearm and having it in the state that you would want to do the first cleaning anyway. I take all my WASRs down to this level of strip to make sure I get all the shavings out. (probably no shavings because US made receiver, but YMMV.) |

Are the bolts complete in just the barreled receiver combo?
|
|
|
The bolts come stripped. The rest comes with the build kit.

Are 5.56 kits going to be available?

I bit the bullet and ordered 2!
I'd love for PSA to do a build video focused on their kits, or if someone else has built one of these kits and made a video - Please post! These 2 will be my first AK builds ever - Total newb here, so I'd rather start out with a video on these kits specifically instead of a generic AK youtube video if at all possible... I got the ALG trigger models, so what does that mean for my 922 compliance? Counts as 3??? |
|
|
I bought one as well, with the Freedom ALG kit, and it will be my first AK build. Some of the issues have me worried, but hopefully PSA will make any issues right. I fear that I won't realize there are missing parts for a while and it seems most reports indicate all kits are missing something. I have high hopes since my recent AR purchase from PSA is quite impressive. Fingers crossed. My kit should arrive today and the barreled receiver should be at my FFL tomorrow. +1 on the PSA video. That would be very helpful.

|
|
Where are you seeing reports of missing parts?
I am in the same boat as you - Wont be building for a while, and when I do it will take some time... I can't just look in the bags like I could with an AR parts kit and know if I was missing something - I'm a newb with AK's... |

I'm a newb at AK building, but cannot ID these other missing parts. They are below circled in red on the photo from PSA. Can anyone ID them? I believe they are stock kit parts, but maybe for a different stock like the Magpul? It looks like every build kit on the PSA website shows different parts, so it's confusing. The Build Kit without furniture doesn't show them, so I might not even need them. I'm very anxious to receive the barrel/receiver today and see how it is. There have been some head space issues reported, as well as too tight receiver covers and a rear sight base without a groove for the actual sight. Aside from the issues, I really like the way these are looking and there have been some good range reports. I sent PSA an email on my possible missing parts (as they might not be parts I even need, except the bolt kit). Hopefully, what I need is with the barrel anyway and it was all for not. My advice for PSA: Kick customer service into overdrive, get the bugs worked out (correct parts/head space/finished parts/install the front sight drum before shipping), and this may be THE American AK to set the standard and the best build kit available. Thanks for the help. http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac298/jdk112/PSAK47%20Kit_zpsizynaqxk.jpg For some reason the pic doesn't show, even though it shows on the preview. Good news, the bolt arrived complete! Also, everything looks good so far. It looks a whole lot better than the Romanian guns I see. Hopefully the parts fit well and function. So far, the bottom hand guard latch is extremely tight. I've tried everything except a hammer. I'm not sure if I'll need to do some file work on the hand guard or what the deal is. The bolt seems to easily slide on the rails and lock/unlock. So far so good!

I received my barreled receiver and bolt last week and the small parts for the bolt were missing. I had a fantastic, helpful phone call with PSA customer service where she apologized and sent out the missing parts.
However, since I"m waiting for the blonde wood build kit to come back in stock (its off the site now), I've put a magpul mag and a steel mag in and there's lots of up/down play where the latch is. In my AK experience, that denotes poor geometry for feeding and will likely need to go back to PSA for repair..unless it works ok. I'm kinda scared to put stuff in like the smaller bolt pins since they've never been put in a bolt before (I've only taken extractor and firing pin retainer pins out and in on other pre-assembled AK bolts). Drifting the front sight barrel in is something I worried about. Oh, and a 7.62 dynacomp I have on a WASR will not go on the threads of this PSA barreled receiver. So yeah, i'm scared I'll be let down. Of course waiting for the blonde wooded build kit will probably take anywhere from 1 week to months to come in and now I'm worried the barreled receiver will not be in warranty or something! Sorry PSA, but its hard for me to trust you after a few bad incidents. It would be real comforting to see other ARFcommers with these completed build kits and find out their success/failure stories so I don't have to be a guinea pig. |

Update on my 2 AK's:
PSA sent me the parts I was missing. After installing the missing parts, I still had the following issues: AK # 1: 1. Gas tube lever will not lock into position. 2. Front sight cylinder (Metal cylinder with threaded hole) is too tight to fit into base. 3. Front sight post will not thread into cylinder more than 1-2 turns. 4. Rear hex screw on Magpul stock will not catch threads in oval nut. AK # 2: 1. Bolt will not close. 2. Threads on the inside of the muzzle brake are not right (I know it is the inside of the muzzle brake and not the barrel because I can thread the muzzle brake from the other AK on it just fine). 3. Gas tube lever will not lock into position. 4. Front sight cylinder (Metal cylinder with threaded hole) is too tight to fit into base. 5. Front sight post will not thread into cylinder more than 1-2 turns. 6. Rear hex screw on Magpul stock will not catch threads in oval nut. I got customer service on the line an asked if I could just send the 2 back in to them as is, and have them correct these issues. They sent me 2 empty boxes via UPS to mail them back and also e-mailed me 2 prepaid shipping labels. I mailed them out on the 15th and they got them on the 16th. I'll keep everyone up to date on the status, but so far they are doing the right thing in my eyes. |

Crap, this is what I was fearing. First time someone has written about their PSA AK build and these some of the things I"m expecting - due to not actually testing their parts by assembling one. I'd guess there's no instructions? Hell, I can't even order online because there's no information. I need the blonde wood kit but am half tempted to do this red kit but the wood looks painted..and there's not a word for description of what's included and the picture doesn't even show the gas tube or front sight parts so i have no idea if its included. Grrrr...
Have you tried any other 14x1LH threaded muzzle devices like I did to see if they go on? |

It isn't painted, it is stained. It looks much better than the cell phone pics of it I posted. It did include the gas tube, front sight parts, and dust cover that aren't shown in the pic. I had some of the same issues as others have stated. I had to do some filing/fitting to get some parts to fit right, but once I did it went together and is pretty tight. The front sight barrel was the hardest part. I ended up hammering mine in as I wasn't sure how tight it was supposed to be, lol. The gas tube needed some attention as well so that the lever could be shut. After I shot it though, it seems to be better now. Darin. |

Final Update on my 2 AK's:
I called PSA today to check on the status of my 2 rifles, and the CSA emailed me 2 tracking numbers (I did not know they shipped). When I got the tracking numbers, I entered them into the UPS site and they were on the truck for delivery today! I got them and everything looks good - I need to take them to the range now, but looks like it's all good to me. VERY FAST Turnaround! |

I purchased the barreled receiver and basic freedom kit last month. It was my first AK build, as well. Youtube vids used throughout the build.
My kit arrived missing the muzzle brake but everything else was GTG. I had the kit together in about an hour and a half. So, I see some issues with "tight" parts people are having. Personally, I want tight and not sloppy. I took my brass/nylon hammer and tapped the handguard and gas tube levers into place. Rock solid. Top cover required a little finesse but once I got it on, it came off and on easily. The front sight cyllinder and post were a bitch but after a couple tries, I got them lined up and the post threaded in. An AK sight tool is a must. PSA had a new muzzle brake to me in a few days but by then I bought a midwest industries brake on clearance at a local shop. Took her to the range not knowing what to expect but after a magazine of wolf, she was sighted in and taking down bowling pins at 100 yards with open sights. . 300 rounds with no issues using tapco mags. i was quite happy with that first trip. I invested in a midwest industries side rail and mounted a vortex spitfire to her for the next range trip. AMAZING! Once sighted in, it was easy to nail small water bottles at 100 yards. I didn't shoot any paper at 100 but I will next time just to see how tight the groups arare. Another 240 rounds with no problems. I've had a few AKs in my collection over the years. This one is my favorite so far with my Vector underfolder a close 2nd. For under $500 (barreled upper was $259 and kit was $199), I cannot complain at all. I've read some things about cast parts being used (trunion specifically and possibly the bolt) and questions about long term durability but so far, so good. Im going to keep shooting it. If something breaks, I will call PSA. They always take care of any issues I have had in the past. Hope this helps! |

Like you said, it feels great, much better than my Wasr when you rack the slide. Mine needed some patience in assembly, but that is the way I like it. Only filing I needed was a little on the front of the receiver cover. Going into battery was a little tight, using calipers, the bolt recess in the carrier was a little smaller than the other carriers I have. Do not start filing around on the bolt, I've seen somebody mention they did. Only have one trip to range, no errors at all. Rifle ran with a Tapco mag, combloc surplus, and even one of those gray Korean cheapo mags. One thing I think is noteworthy, I was shooting Tula HP rounds I picked up on sale years ago at a discount. My Wasr hates anything that isn't a pointed FMJ, it'll jam a bullet back into the case if you aren't careful. I did put in a Texas AK Trigger group. With the MOE furniture and the trigger kit, that gives me 6 pieces to meet the 922 thingy. The grip cap was missing from the MOE kit, PSA contacted Magpul and they sent it out. I'll write more once I get back to the range with a scope mounted, anxious to see what it will do. |

Why do the 922 thingy? It's an American made rifle, not imported so it does not require 922r compliance.

PSA lists on their website which parts of their PSAK47 are not 922 compliant. |

Are there any independent video reviews of this thing yet?
I really want to justify buying parts and putting it together once I finish my SPR build and 80% lower project. |

Yeah, I'd love to see one in their red furniture to see if it looks like plastic still.
