I used Colt's customer service a few years ago when I had issues with the folding front sight on my 6940 not aligned, I called them, they gave me info on where to send it and I had it back within a month.
The customer service was really good, in fact told me the upper would take a few months, just because they were so busy. I got it back within a month, so I was really happy.
I don't know where all the BS about Colt's CS comes from, but my experience, albeit very limited was excellent. Of all the Colt rifles I have owned and it's literally been in the 60's now, that was the only one I ever had to return for anything.
Try it and give it a go, you might be surprised.
