Years ago I plunked down near $700 from my pre-ban M17S. Then I had kids, meaning I don't get out shooting a lot. While I have not experienced any problems with my M17S the few times I have shot it, I have been reading about the "silent recall“ and upgrades that can be had for $100 plus shipping.
My question is : are these “upgrades” really necessary and/or just recommended? Is there some danger to myself or by-standers if I keep my M17S as I originally bought it? I respect Bushmaster but I am having a difficult time ascertaining if the modifications/upgrades are a "wise" thing to do, or, just to have the latest improvements on the rifle.
Someday I hope to pass this rifle down to my son, and at the rate I'm shooting, it will have plenty of life left in it. I just want to make sure I may not be handing him some future traumatic event.
So please describe/explain: what are the upgrades and why are they necessary? Are they strongly recommended, or, get them only if you would like the newer features?
