I used a Reactin Rod for my small frame UU kit, now considering the .308 but I'm not sure what I would use to get the thing built. Hadn't seen any assembly videos on YouTube for the big frames yet. Suggestions or tips?

Provided barrel nut wrench, 1/2 drive socket wrench, couple Allen's for gas block and bolts for rail/ upper, wrench for muzzle device and maybe 10 minutes.
Remove rail from upper and remove barrel nut Remove gas block from barrel Install barrel nut and replace gas block and tighten 3 screws per spec Install barrel assembly, tighten barrel nut per specs Re-install rail with 4 bolts Install CH and BCG Muzzle Device Done Vice helps but you can do this on your coffee table for the most part. |

You took me a little more literally than I intended...A vice is best of course but you can attach it to a lower, lay it on something non marring like carpet or a rug and put your knee on the upper/lower to hold it. Not saying it's ideal but it works if that's all you've got. Anyone planning on building rifles should own a vice or go to Harbor Freight and get one. Worth every penny.

I made a simple two-piece clamping fixture out of plate steel (top half) and angle iron (lower half). Mount lower piece in vice and sandwich upper receiver in clamp. Tighten (4) bolts evenly (don't overdo it) and cover fixture with masking tape to prevent marring of receiver. Make an extra smaller upper plate that will fit inside the carry handle cutout for carry handle type uppers.

Knight Stick (P/N 30447) and heavy bench vise. Will do SR15 E3 barrel extensions and pretty much all AR10s. Costs less than half as much as an AR10 reaction rod and does E3 extensions as a bonus if you have any MOD1/2 SR15s.

The UU receivers don't fit in any of the normal fixtures.
I would rather scratch up my UDE upper on the way to the range than when assembling it. I ordered one each of the Kley-Zion Barrel Spline Socket Rods. I am still waiting on them, so no review. Not sure what makes a reaction rod so expensive. But, it is buy one, make a custom jig to hold the receiver, or develop forearms like Popeye. |

Too bad Magpul doesn’t make a large frame Bevblock. I’ll probably just wind up using some Nomar stuff off fleabay or the JP clamp thingy.

I have lots of expensive tools in the box. I keep coming back to two delrin cutting boards (ikea/walmart/your wife’s kitchen) and my vise to hold billet or large frame uppers. I do also like to use my reaction rod during those times when I need to rotate the upper for tightening rail mounting screws, rail attachments, etc.

I wrapped the upper with cardboard and put it in my vise without any issues at all.

Clamp the barrel in a vise for the muzzle device, that's all you need (or get creative). Never had any issues using the hand wrench for the barrel nut with the tOBRs, hitting it with another 10ft-lbs using the gizmo with a torque wrench on it is easy enough just by holding the rifle/upper.

I used a plastixrevolution vise block for my 308 build (not larue) so I could get proper torque on the barrel nut, worked great and economical.

I'll buy one and try it out when my 6.5 ships. Then if anyone else wants to borrow it just PayPal me 10 bucks for a flat rate usps box and I will ship to you. When you are done with it, then you ship it to the next guy etc. When no other forum members need it, ship it back to me. Anyone in?

Small Delrin cutting boards in the vice.
Turn the upper sideways and clamp it in the vice with the pieces of the board insulating the aluminum receiver from damage. |

Has anyone tried to remove the gas tube from the LaRue 22" 260 barrel? Trying to change out the LoPro block for an SLR adjustable block. Pin came out easy enough, but tube will not budge. Some kinda LaRue gas system voodoo

From the 6.5 CM owners thread.

https://imgur.com/a/xdNC8 I studied it , I pulled on it , studied it some more ... I've seen nothing like it before , is it threaded , rock set in place , machine press fit , crimped on , maybe all of these... 30 minutes of monkeying around I resorted to boiling it and using sockets slid over the gas tube and of the size to slam down on the gas block and after repeated dead blows with gravity assist , viola! Success... Note - wrap your gas tube in electrical tape or blue painters tape to prevent the sockets from scraping off the gas tube finish! LaRue gas block for the Ultimate Upper is one serious piece of hardware. I think someone here hammered theirs off with a socket (like a slide hammer on the gas tube). When I read that, I ordered another +2 gas tube from White Oak Armament. It was like $17 shipped. View Quote |

I've had good luck with the SLR adjustable blocks on my other (non- tOBR cartridge) LaRue barrels. May need the flexibility since there will be a Magpul PRS stock on this build. Guess if things don't work out with the SLR I'll have original LaRue LoPro block and tube to throw back on there.

Beats the heck out of a plastic fixture to hold the upper in a vise. It was half the price of the Geisele. Botach doesn't get high reviews, but I did not have any problems with my order. |
