Is there reason not to shoot hornaday 123gr ELD? It can be had for $18 a box. And I have I was getting hits at 940 m and 1100 m on saterday .. ( would have been more consistent if I could chase the bugs out of my shooting but that's another story) Are there better alternatives in terms of downrange performance with out reloading ? And after about 300rd.. what is the best way to get the carbon off this pretty brown gun ? Lol View Quote |

Thank you Draconis! Great hands on info. What you did with your 20” stealth is what I was thinking about working towards on a 6.5g.
ETA: rifle is suppressed too. Sorry I just assume everyone uses a can in free states |

...Before I got my LT lower I tried the 6.5 G on another LT lower I've got that runs the Vltor A5 system....It didn't work so well for me....Either the buffer is too heavy or too light (didn't have time to diagnose since I was function testing the G and trying to get it sighted in)... ...When the empty case was ejected, it somehow ended up stuck between the BCG and the forward edge of the ejection port, inline with the chamber...almost like the buffer was moving too fast....Crushed three cases that way before I swapped to another lower with the standard carbine buffer/spring which worked fine... ...Oh, and for the record, the internal dimensions of the LT 7.62 tube and the Vltor A5 tube are identical, just the exterior dimensions are slightly different....I measured both before I used the LT tube with the A5 spring/buffer.... ETA: Oh, and the A5 system with Sentry 7 adjustable gas block tuned to the load and Lantac Dragon MD is sweet...I run that set up on my 20" Stealth and if you can get a good prone position you can see the impact at 100 yards....less recoil than a 10/22... So thinking about an a5 stock for the 6.5 Grendel and noticed this... m4 mil spec= 7.3” Magpul 762 = 7.8” LaRue 762= 7.875” VLTOR a5= 7 15/16 = 7.9375” ***these are all from the websites or from LT forum in case of LT tube. Double check my numbers just in case So anyone ever use a 762 LaRue receiver extension like an A5 and use the A5 buffer spring (like from heavy buffers) for a small frame? Was thinking a heavy buffer spring for the Grendel would be sweet and I have a spare LT receiver extension laying around. ...When the empty case was ejected, it somehow ended up stuck between the BCG and the forward edge of the ejection port, inline with the chamber...almost like the buffer was moving too fast....Crushed three cases that way before I swapped to another lower with the standard carbine buffer/spring which worked fine... ...Oh, and for the record, the internal dimensions of the LT 7.62 tube and the Vltor A5 tube are identical, just the exterior dimensions are slightly different....I measured both before I used the LT tube with the A5 spring/buffer.... The good news is that I can shoot my 6.5G with the TranQuilo while I'm waiting for the stamp to clear. The bad news is that the indoor range is limited to 25yds, and my scope's parallax adjustment will not come down that far, so cheek weld is critical to group size. I'd love to learn what this gun likes and buy a couple cases of it.

So far I have had better groups with the Hornady SST's vs ELD's, both factory loads. But more testing to come and work up some of my own loads.

To date I haven't been impressed with any factory ammo.
My best 3-shot group with the ELDs is .76 moa. I haven't been able to get a 5-shot group under 1 MOA. SST's 5-shot group is .94 moa FGGM and a different lot of ELDs arrived today so will have more results tomorrow. Should have my dies in by the end of the week, going to pull the rest of the ELDs from my previous lot and start load development with virgin cases. |

Your groups look alot like mine which is basically 1MOA or 5 shots with the boxed ELDs. I have been trying to find a load that my barrel likes with the 123 ELDs and have had very little luck so far. I am going to switch the 120 SMKS and XBR powder to see if that works. So far my Larue upper is the least accurate of my 4 Grendel uppers and by far the most expensive. Im hoping to find a load to change that trend.
What recipe were you using for that 120 SMK group? Did you do a ladder work up first? |

Hornady Black 123gr ELD-M at 100yds. My TranQuilo is still in jail so I used my Harvester 30 this time. It's an excellent precision rifle can. I keep running into an issue where my first two shots touch, and then the third shot opens the group. Maybe I am just getting excited by shot #3. Who knows. https://i.imgur.com/qVZgt4V.jpg View Quote |

I have a couple of questions that may seem dumb to some of you guys, but I ask because I really don't know. I have never built an upper or a rifle for that matter but was considering giving it a shot in the ultimate upper kit in the 6.5 Grendel.
question 1 is, will any lower fit on the upper kit or is it larue specific? question 2. I own a lwrc and like their lowers would they work on this upper kit? question 3. if an lwrc lower would work on this upper kit, they make a six-8 lower that takes magpuls slightly larger magazines specific for 6.8 ammo .Is there any advantage to using this type of lower with these type of mags that have slightly more room, or it really doesn't matter with the 6.5 Grendel? I hope I explained everything as plainly as possible especially my last question. ps I own a larue predatobr in 7.62 and quality is second to none. I would like to order asap and any help info, or opinion would be appreciated thanks in adavance. if this is in the wrong forum please direct me to where it may be better addressed thanks. |
